Your [cost effective] recommendations...
1. HD or Bluray DVD player
2. Compact entertainment system - I considered an all in one soundbar but reviews online for existing units were meh. Think "virtual" for my squarish concrete walled apartment. I imagine bouncing sound waves off the walls will make small sound much bigger.

1. I'm still suggesting people hold right off on either. Let them battle it out for a bit because neither is a safe bet for the long term.

Maybe go for one that plays both if you can't decide?
If you want to go Blu-ray, a PS3 is the best bet at the moment in my view as it's cheaper and still has high quality output.

I have to agree, if you go Blu-ray, PS3 is the best. I'm thinking about that myself (I like playing games though so there is an added benefit).

Honestly... I'd hold off until the combo units become a bit more affordable. That way you have one box and it can play either.

The Toshiba HD-XE1 HD DVD player if it's been released where you are. Best bet I've seen so far for HD DVD players. If not, the Toshiba HD-E1 is decent but doesn't upscale DVDs as well.
Echo the PS3 recommendations for a Blu-ray player as well.
P.S. My day job's as a gadget reviewer so I get to fiddle around with a few gadgets, if that helps :)
