From the Clip Mobile web reaches critical mass posted by Tyme:

The mobile web has reached a "critical mass" of users this year, according to a report by analysts Nielsen Mobile.

I give it 6 months until augmented reality apps become common on handheld devices of iPhone caliber. Specifically, I predict the first apps will come from companies like Google, presenting apps that use your phone's camera+gps and overlay GMaps/GEarth information; informative labels that appear floating around buildings and streets.

The interesting thing about "the mobile web" is that devices that display web content on them, that fit in your pocket, aren't nearly as limited as "the mobile web" played them to be back when technologists were discussing this next, new wave. I was also hesitant to dive deep into mobile development in years past because I knew that technology would get better and the limitations I'd be designing for would either change or be eliminated in short order.

Good call. We've come a long way since a b&w screen showing a plain-text, bulleted list (^_^)

English please.

Base example of augmented reality app: Google Maps knows your GPS location and which way you're pointing your phone.

Point your phone's camera at something, for example the White House. Looking at the live view on your phone's screen you see a floating "White House" label-graphic overlayed by the Google Maps app.

One concept I've been wanting to implement for a while, but don't have the time to do for free, is location data.

You "leave" files, web pages, descriptions, etc at an actual location. A restaurant leaves a menu. You're walking by and browsing google maps or another app, and you've got a cue that there's info. Click, see the menu, when you're near the restaurant. This is a simple example, it can be a lot more robust and interesting. Just imagine some ARGs with that kind of feature.

See THAT would kick ass.

I'm anxious for the day I can purchase dinner, movie tickets, etc with my iphone and not have to carry a wallet anymore.
