So from everything I've seen here, recommendations are:

1) Palm TX
2) iPod touch
3) EeePC strapped to the back of a cell phone.

Hmm... Yeah, I'm gonna have to pass on #3 for now.

Alright, then, I'll research the remaining two options and see what comes up. Off the bat, the Palm's got an advantage because I can buy financial tracking software for it. (I don't know whether the iPhone has this, but suspect it doesn't yet.) However, that's obviously a preliminary decision.

Thank you all!

I'm sitting here thinking you should glue a normal phone to an EeePC and call it the ultimate PDA, but that's just a crazy idea that probably won't work.

I'll leave it for the people who know better.

Overstock.com has Palm TX's on sale for around $230 a LOT... you may look there.

It's annoying having to learn a new written language but if you get a LOT of use out of it you catch on fairly quickly.

The iPhone/iPod Touch synch with your address book, and iCal calendars.

I like my Palm T|X, which does all that you want, and since list price is $299 you should be able to find it cheaper somewhere at some point. Syncing to Outlook (or the Palm Desktop if you must) is great because then you have your appointments, contacts, etc. on the desktop and on the handheld. (Does the iPod Touch sync to anything like that? I don't use mine for that, so don't know...)

And I never had any trouble with Graffiti on the Palm since I've had one since they were called Palm Pilots (I still miss my Tungsten T :( !) but they've changed the Graffiti on the T|X now and I still can't get used to it. If you've never had the old Graffiti though, I imagine that wouldn't be an issue.

Just wait for the 3g iphone announcement, the older phones and touches will likely fit into that price range!

I'd still suggest an iPod Touch, maybe you can find a refurb at some point in time. I tried to get into the PDA game for a while, but the iPhone/iPod Touch really changed the game. No need for a stylus, no need for cryptic graffiti (mentioned above), and so many other benefits to boot. Not to mention the crazy awesomeness to come with 3rd party apps in the coming months. If your $300 limit isn't extremely limiting, I would definitely suggest an iPod Touch.

I had a Palm Tungsten E back before my iPod Touch and I LOVED it... They sell an amped up version called the E2 for $199 that takes SD cards and you can play MP3's on it. It fit ALL my needs perfectly.

Normally I would suggest the iPod Touch since it handles contacts/notes (and doesn't have that pain in the ass Graffiti recognition) but you're not looking above $300 so... (the 8GB Touch falls in @ $299)

For years now, my wife's been the type to squirrel away "To Do" lists made up of any scrap of paper she could find. She has also tried juggling pocketbook and wall calendars. And she's been tracking miles and expenditures as best she could using paper means.

I told her it's time she got a PDA, or something the like. In fact, I've been telling her this for the past couple of years, though it's only recently she has decided to start looking for something.

At first I thought about getting her a Palm Z22, but something tells me she'll also want to start using it to listen to MP3's while at work (instead of carrying an MP3 player around. This means something with a card reader will probably be preferable. I started looking around some and realized that I haven't a CLUE what's good out there these days.

So here I come, to the proverbial Chawlk hive mind, meekly asking for your recommendation(s) for a good solution. Budget is <US$300.
