Stay away from Maxtor.
Worst drives ever. That's from decades of experience. I had avoided them for about 8 years due to high failure rates. Well I finally decided to give them another chance and grabbed a small maxtor external to use for Time Machine. It failed in 5 months. Complete failure.
Be careful with Seagate as well, as they now own Maxtor. Their cheap drives are occasionally rebadged Maxtors. Before that acquisition, Seagate was my absolute favourite drive. Now I lean more towards WD, but wouldn't turn away a true Seagate drive.

See, I have used Maxtor for several years and have not experienced the kind of failures you describe. I have a 250gb internal maxtor, a 120gb external maxtor, and a 300gb external maxtor for the last couple of years and haven't had them fail.
That is just my experience.

I knew Seagate bought Maxtor, but I thought I remembered a deal going down years ago where Maxtor and Western Digital got together in the consumer space.
I recall one selling their consumer HD business to the other, but my Google skills fail me (or perhaps it's my memory).

I have a 250gb Maxtor and hate it. I have 2 WD My Book drives and love them.
