From the Clip WordPress 2.6 Available posted by Scrivs:

I’m happy to announce that version 2.6 of WordPress.org is now available, almost a month ahead schedule. Version 2.6 “Tyner,” named for jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, contains a number of new features that make WordPress a more powerful CMS: you can now track changes to every post and page and easily post from wherever you are on the web, plus there are dozens of incremental improvements to the features introduced in version 2.5.

Not sure if I'm out of the loop at all on these things, but has this been the quietest launch ever for WP or is it just losing steam since it basically is the mainstream blogging engine? I mean how do you get excited over blogging engines anymore?

Whoa. Thanks for the tip, I still haven't upgraded to 2.5 on mine... need to stop neglecting that.

I've upgraded 90% of my sites to 2.6 about an hour ago... SMOOTH AS GLASS.

Nice upgrade!

Good to hear the upgrade was smooth.

I usually wait about a week to see if there are any conflicts with important plugins, but I usually do upgrade and plan to this time as well. I like the sound of smooth as glass.

Unless that glass is broken, then it is bad.

Yeah, that's why I let other people go through first. :)

I have a few sites to upgrade myself, but I agree about the super quiet launch. I really like the feature they added for quick posting (with bookmarklets) like Tumblr. Now I wish I could get all my data from Tumblr and move to WP...

Smooth as Glass was all I could come up with that didn't sound nasty. :)

My dad used to have a gun lubricant called STOS that he called "Slicker Than Owl Shit"... I could have said that ;)

Um. Since I've never run across owl shit, I'll take your word on that one RightOn. :)

Yeah, that's why I let other people go through first. :)

My mom and I always try to get each other to do it first. One of us will say to the other, "WordPress upgrades. Very dangerous. You go first."

And I'm still running the legacy branch on most of my sites, because I just plain don't like 2.1+, AT ALL.

LOL, I'm amazed that you have a mom that knows HOW to upgrade her WP install.

My dad IM's me and says "hey, it's telling me there's a new version... get hoppin."

Heh, my mom was a WP user before I was, actually. She owned her first computer when I was in high school (before I owned one), some old thing that ran DOS, with a monochrome screen and a dot matrix printer.

Of course, now the positions have flopped a bit, since I called her today to ask her some questions about a PHP issue I'm working through, and she said I'd need to find another guru, because she can't keep up with me anymore. I was sad...

It's not just quiet. It's also ahead of schedule. I mean, when is the last time a WordPress release was actually on time, let alone ahead of time?

Besides, 2.6 isn't really packed full with features. Like the post said, a lot of it is meant to streamline what they have now rather than adding completely new features, which is a good thing and I actually appreciate them for this.

The good thing is that in all my 50 over plugins, I don't have any problems with compatibility. They said it wasn't meant to be anyway since it's pretty much the same as 2.5.

It takes me 20 seconds to update each WordPress site I maintain though. SSH is a Godsend.

@Dreamweaver: You should update your WordPress though for a number of reasons. One are the critical updates that come with it. Second is that if I remember correctly, Search engines like Google or Technorati doesn't index older versions of WordPress. I'm not sure if they meant version numbers or older versions of WordPress that have security vulnerabilities which rules out the patched legacy 2.0. Though, come to think of it, it's been 2.0.11 for ages. I thought it was supposed to keep updating as soon as new security flaws come through?

@Kami, I get great search results, and my site is indexed just fine running 2.0.11. (In fact, 70% of my visitors get there from a search, which is kind of a mixed blessing, as it indicates that regular readers aren't as high as I'd like, I think. :( ) That being said, I think it's due to a couple of plugins that I use that it gets indexed so well.

Anyway, yes, I know all about upgrading to keep current with critical security flaws, but that doesn't mean I have to leave the legacy version as the WP crew have committed to keeping it current security-wise until 2010. So, I have a year or so before I HAVE to do something, and by then maybe a newer version will come out that I can deal with.

I was really stumped by this one. Didn't 2.5 just come out with a lot of oompah?

I just set up a site for my girlfriend - yup, still going strong, hence the recent silence ;) - and I'm not looking forward to spending time on this.

Sure, it's not rocket science, but think of Murphy. She needs the site to be live 100% from next week because she's got a booth at some big fashion fair, and all the press, PR and invites are about to go out... I think I'm skipping this, or at least waiting a couple weeks.

Although, I do like that Google Gears feature... and that quick post feature... and...

/*heads to wp.org and begins download*/

;)

yeah I enabled Gears at home and it's a lot faster than when I load up the blog from work.

Posting takes half a second to complete with Gears turned on, compared to 15-20 before. NICE.

My upgrade was mostly smooth. It broke a custom plugin that I wrote, but that's because they changed some things with how images are accessed. It was a quick and easy fix and everything seems to be working just fine now!

I haven't had much time to play around with any of the new features, but they do look pretty sweet. Revision history is hot hot hot and if I had a laptop, I would definitely be eating up the Google Gears thing.
