Just as I pay for software. If I find it really useful and it saves me time and/or money and I have some to spare (not as often as I'd like), I will donate.
I'd love to be able to give Mozilla the £1bn they deserve but only if I had enough for a few cans of beans afterwards.

You get what you pay for. That goes for free apps as well as commercial apps.
If no one is supporting a project, even if it starts out well it'll fester and fade.

I always donate to open source solution providers, plugin writers, etc., that is if they have a PayPal button on their site to do so.
It's like back in the day of "shareware", if you liked something and continued to use it, you donated $10.00 USD or some other amount.
Donations help the developer continue to do add-ons, bug fixes and to promote other "free" programs or software.

Also, it helps keep their motivation up. When they're getting paid, be it ever so little, it makes them feel appreciated.

I like to when I can, however that's not often. The open-source revolution has brought us allot for free, and without support from those who can afford it, it will die, and we'll be back where we were prior.
