A renowned black magic practitioner in Indonesia has performed a voodoo ritual to jinx President Bush and his entourage during their upcoming visit on Monday.
The witch doctor slit the throat of a goat and a small snake and stabbed a black crow in the chest. Then he mixed the blood with spice and broccoli, drank the potion and smeared some on his face.
Says the man — “I don’t hate Americans, but I don’t like Bush.” He says he believes the jinx will work because “the devil is with me today.” So far no response from the secret service.

I heard this story yesterday, and to be honest I didn’t know what to think of it. As a Christian I do believe Satan has an influence in this world and I have heard stories similar to this from missionaries . What do you guys think? Do you think this could really happen or do you think it’s just a whole lot of superstition?
I also have this posted at my site so if you want to comment there to feel free.

Not usually wanting to get involved in religious debates... always ends up messy and everyone has their own ideas about it. However, I think a lot of this is the power of the mind which comes down to also what you believe. You shouldn't ever underestimate the power of such things to snowball through the strength in rumour and suggestion.

Well think about it this way...
Myths often have some truth behind them so we'll never know.

So, now Bush will begin making all sorts of wrong and stupid decisions?
Seriously though, I'm too much of a skeptic to believe a word of this. For what it's worth, I think myths sometimes have some truth in them precisely because they sprang from the human mind and how we interpreted the reality around us ages ago. Archetypes are strong influences to this day, witchcraft, to me, isn't.
That's not to say we shouldn't consider the real power of people's beliefs of course.

Everyone knows about witch doctors, but few are aware of just how many 'witch lawyers' are out there...
On a serious note, I never believed in black magic until it was used on me. I don't know whether or not it will work on Bush, but it worked on me...

They busted this on "Myth Busters" tonight....
NOT, as if it really needs busting...
Do people really lack the ability anymore of identifying someone who is just plain flat out nuts? Nothing like this throughout history has even been proven... there was a time when people would twirl their index finger around their ear and make the "coo coo" sound when things like this would happen. Now days thanks to liberal "geniuses" we have to respect people like this and actually consider a level of seriousness in what they practice, or else one would be invading one of their corrupted interpretations of any given constitutional amendment. I'm sorry if I offend someone in what I am about to do, (waves finger around ear and makes the coo coo sound) This person is nuts! Do something productive and read a book or something.
Thanks for letting me rant.

Lol! It's good to know a hippie like yourself sees logic in smearing blood all over your face rather than seeing truth and being given faith in something a little more realistic. Like A DEITY.
You never fail to comment on something religious when in fact you have no theology of your own. You have an empty black pit of knowledge only of the planet you walk on. I wonder how all of that will work out for you in 100 years. Do you ever think outside the box? Are you content with living a political life off of news headlines, 9rules posts and conspiracy theories? If so, you would fit right in on the same page with the blood smeared faces of people whom you believe possess sanity. Let me know how that whole "save the world but kill animals, smear blood, hate the US, don't make anyone angry with what you believe yet don't profile them for doing so" thing works out for you. Meanwhile you can find me actually studying the history of religions and the lack thereof. ;)
P.S: Not everything you read on the internet is actually true. :O I know, I know, Crazy huh? There are books from the last 500+ years you can learn from.... Just a thought.

No... I see it all the same voodoo nonsense.
I'm just saying that this voodoo and your bible have the same level of proof and effect. Many "voodoo" treatments are mostly psychosomatic. If you believe you're better/stronger/etc you are. It's also how I explain most religion.
My point was: how can you snub something like this when your own faith is just as unprovable?

No wonder billions of people believe in Christianity, and only 1 person believes in Olianity.
I'm not on this planet to prove my faith to anyone, That's not even a teaching or written in scripture. I would actually be so blunt in asking you to prove me wrong. I can snub someone rubbing blood all over their face just as much as a non Christian can snub them. Have you asked yourself, "How many non-Christians think this is crazy too?" Your sad attempts of taking every topical comment on 9rules and relating it to Christianity leaves much to be desired from your posts. What is it with you and Christians anyway? It's almost like you are worried about something. For something you believe to be so wrong and inaccurate you sure do spend a lot of time trying to debate it with lack of any reproof. Do you even know when in History "Atheism" came about? Do you people even have any way to prove your faith in nothing? You actually BELIEVE it! Or did atheism always exist from the beginning of time? It came about from the inside of an exploding rock. People surely didn't always practice atheism. Do some studying and get back to me, try to use actual books and give me references. Showing me that You possess the ability of researching outside the Google search field would really mean a lot to me. That should be enough for a humanist like yourself. Go save the world little one, go save the world....

I replied to most of that and explained my faith again in the other thread.
Would you believe in god if you hadn't read or been taught about god?
After that reply, I think you might need to save yourself.

I agree, there's only so much name-calling and sarcasm that a single post can take and I believe that was used up in 'racial profiling'.
Those with differing beliefs will never get on when attempting to find a middle ground. Human nature thrives on conflict and we see that here at 9Rules.
That's not to say the exchange isn't educational, informative or interesting but there comes a point where the same discussion overflows into other threads with users baiting each other.
I know it's hard to stay on topic but trying to disprove each others' beliefs isn't what I enjoy reading, but more sensibly reasoned points. So as Oli once said, let's "keep it in the right thread, cowboy".

Umm, YES...
...Go on.... Oh that's it?
Ohhhh, You are allowed to scroll up! I didn't mention anything about God in this thread, Your dear friend that practices the same beliefs as you changed the topic, I just replied. How can you quote Oli? The same person that can't practice what they preach!

I've known Oli some time and I can assure you he practices what he preaches, maybe it doesn't seem that way but if you put all his posts together you'll see they do correlate.
And sir, saying you'd believe in god if you hadn't been educated or read about "him" is folly. That's exactly like saying you'd speak English if you lived in the middle of the Amazon on your lonesome, having never read or heard anything about it.
You believe everything you do through a combination of individual thought and education, you wouldn't have just imagined - having been left to your own devices - that God was to be credited for your mere existance.

It doesn't really matter how long you have known Oli, Someone that has only known Him for this one post can see that He changed the subject and made it about God. I then replied.
So how did the first person ever (moses) discover God? If there was no one to "Teach" him? I use Moses as an example, Think about it, Pre-Christian literature how did one learn about God? Have you ever thought about that? Faith in God comes from God, Not from ourselves, Knowledge of who God is comes from God inspiring His people, hence The Bible and some Christian literature. I believe people that have an ounce of humility in them enter a stage in their life where they wonder about something greater than themselves.

To go back on topic:
Why is the "act" of VooDoo any different than if a Christan man had said "I prayed all night for something bad to happen to Bush on his visit here." I don't see how this is possibly more newsworthy than a report on what people prayed for last night before they went to sleep.
michaellouviere
Written Jan. 29, 2007 / Report /
I thought you were going BACK on topic?
Actually, it's NO different. Simply because Christianity doesn't teach "Pray for bad things to happen to people". Therefor if a "Christian" did do this, it would be the act of something other than the practice of Christianity. I believe you were accurate in calling it "Voodoo", though I would just call it NOT Christianity, false and wrong.
I don't see how your comment:
1) Plays any relevance to the original topic...
and
2) Relates to Christianity at all...
Read up!

There is a large difference between what you feel is Christianity and various churches of Christianity teach. What makes you feel you're right?
The problem that I had with you in this thread, michaellouviere, is not your faith but your blatant hypocrisy where you expect people to tolerate your faith while you pound it out with other faiths.
lisa

First, it was on topic, and second, Christians do pray for "bad" things to happen to other people, whether they realize it or not.
Praying to win a fight, win a war, win a contest--not good for the other side.
Also, the VooDoo guy said "the devil was on his side." Fine, that's just like God being on yours. So perhaps the apt analogy would be his praying for something bad to happen is as newsworthy as you praying for something good to happen.
People believe in different things, and sensationalizing beliefs that are "different" from what we've established from the "norm" is just a way to enforce the "normal" because we've decided "different" is bad.
And I'm talking about religions in general here. I'm not a Christan, and only using Christanity as an analogy. I could have changed the original metaphor to Muslim or Jewish, and it would have ment the same thing.
Why, when it involves Bush, does what anyone pray about matter? It's not like they publish daily reports of who else the VooDoo witch doctor has cursed lately.

No... The topic was about a renowned black magic practitioner in Indonesia performing voodoo rituals.
First off, are you guessing? Do you have friends calling themselves "Christian" and that's what they pray for? Kinda....went of the deep end there Lisa. Your logic is rather disturbing actually. So when you buy a loaf of bread do you look at it as though you are taking a loaf from someone else? When you drink a glass of water, you are really drinking the water of someone who is dying of thirst. With your liberalistic logic, weather you realize it or not, that is what you are doing, and it's all your fault.
You have a really shallow idea of what prayer is and consists of. Little kids tend to blame their imaginary friends when they spill the milk. This guy tends to claim that "satan is with him" while drinking a concoction of blood and broccoli. You have the right to believe whatever you want, And I have the right to say its nuts.
Ohhhhh, you mean like Christianity!? LOL... You know what the "norm" is?
The "norm" is people lacking belief in God. When someone believes in God, the "Norm" calls them "different" as a way to enforce them being "normal" because you decided "different" is bad, and bad is belief in God.
Wait, That's what you just said!
I agree.

I don't have an "Idea" I have the reality of actual Faith. Something you can't debate, unless you are willing to say I don't have faith. And in order for you to believe it, you would have to have faith. And in turn what you would be debating would become yourself, one whom possesses faith.

Well, if anything happens, someone let me know. I'll pop some popcorn, grab a soda and turn on the news.
If anything, Bush might feel a strong urge to stay away from this man. It's not the "voodoo." It's the goat blood he's got smeared on his face. I mean, really, who wants to be around that? That was so last year.
