Hi All,
This question came up in a recent debate in my Church and I'm just wondering what sort of opinions you peoples might have.
Question: Imagine you are running some kind of youth team to work with the youth in your Church. What age group to do expect to be working with?
How old is 'youth'?

If it helps, when I was younger, my youth group consisted of 14-18.

The church I attend has a group for middle school and high school kids, with occasional inter-mingling.

CYO (9th -12th grades) and Jr High CYO (7th and 8th) met separately and attended different conferences but we usually collaborated on service projects.

I think if the person in the team can't relate to those you're ministering to then they aren't right. I've worked in youth for over 8 years. There will be those in the youth who are natural leaders. Those are the ones that are mentored in that way to become leaders for their piers. If you're just starting out that may be hard to do, but you can definitely begin looking for it and encouraging it now while there are fill-ins.
Jr. High to Sr. High were always together sometimes College would be involved. Sr. High were mentors for Jr. High, and College to Sr. High. Though obviously they were separated after the general meeting and teaching and discussions would occur on their level.

yeah my youth group is just high school, i think having jr. high and highschool is just way to many age groups and we aren't all at the same levels.

It depends on how many kids there are. If the facility is big enough, 7-12th grade can be together up to about 200 people... after that they probably need to be split between high school and middle school, and maybe everyone meets up twice a month for a big rocking worship service. College is not youth and should not be treated the same as the high schoolers and middle schoolers. The college ministry I'm involved with is sponsored by a large church in town, but we meet in our own building directly across the street from the university campus.

I am a youth pastor and my "youth" are 7th grade through 12th grade. The woman in charge of "children" has pre-school through 6th grade.

Youth is wasted on the young.
But having worked with "youth" programs (or rather as part of them) it was always weird to hear people call themselves "youth" at 20-some years old. Cap it at 18.
