Hot Tip: Rolling Windows Down/Up after Removing Key

So I was out and about with my wife the other day, and we stopped to get gas. As I turned off my GTI, I forgot to roll down the windows.

We had the air on because of the Hellish heat wave around here, and I didn’t want the wifey to roast while I was filling up. But wait. I turned off the car. How can I roll them down without turning the car back on again, or at least sticking the key in the ignition?

We discovered a dirty little secret: you can still roll down/up your windows a few seconds or so after removing the key, but you have to do it immediately or it won’t work. Sweeeeet! Well, at least I think it’s neat. You all may be like, “Oh yeah, we’ve known about that for forever.” Oh well. I’m easily amused.

I haven’t tested exactly how much time you have before you can’t do it, nor do I know if this is available on the MkV’s. I’m sure it is.

The other more well-known feature is being able to roll your windows up/down and close/open your sunroof by sticking your key in the door, turning and holding it. That’s a great way of letting the heat out before getting in your oven car.

  1. I have AlienTech’s chip installed in my Golf, so I can roll the windows up with the remove (and even leave a crack open if I want) or roll the windows down with the remove. I’ve heard that on new VW’s you can request that they add the mod right there at the dealership.

As long as nobody opens their door, it works forever. Well maybe not forever, but you have a lot more than a few seconds.

I still like being able to walk away from the car with the sunroof and all the windows open, press a key combo on the remote and everything closes, leaving a crack for hot air to get out.

Aha yes, thanks for the further clarification on how it works Justin. I have looked into Alientech. Very cool that it works with the remote. I may just get that one of these days.
