Case Study: How I Increased my subscribers to over 1800 in ten months
One of the many goals that bloggers have is high subscriber count. Now I am not famous like Darren Rowse who can start a new blog out of the blue, and have 1300 subscribers in less than a week. So it took me more time to get to the number where I am, but I know that a lot of people have a hard time getting to this point in this short amount of time. So I thought I should share some of my techniques that I used over the past that has contributed to the number of subscribers that I have.

Set a Goal
Set yearly goals, or quarterly goals. Don’t make your goals seem unrealistic. Make it seem some what realistic. So My goal was by the end of the year of 2008, I want to have 2000+ subscribers. Which I think is possible. You need a goal in order to be motivated and inspired. And I believe motivation plays a big role in your writing style.
Write Quality Content
Have you noticed, everyone say that. Even people who just start their blog and have no idea what is going on in the industry. Self-proclaimed experts tell you to write quality content. But what the heck is quality content. In my eyes, Quality content is resourceful content. Content that helps your user. Content that attract your users. So every time you write a post think twice before you write it. Think how your users will find this article helpful. That is all I am going to say about quality content.
Care About Users
Caring about your users always help you get more subscribers. I get crazy amount of emails. I know that I might not be able to reply to all, but I try to reply to as many as I can. I try to help the users if they have questions on one of the tutorials that I posted. So how did I show that I care about my users?
- I reply to as many emails as I can - Now if you get insane amount of emails, it is hard to reply to all, but I try to reply to as many as I can.
- I reply to comments - People post comments on my posts, and often they refer to me by asking me a question, or something personal. I try to reply to all of those comments. So I am going to recommend you all to get (Brian’s Threaded Comments).
- I reward my Top Commentators - Simply install a top commentator plugins, it shows your readers that you care about them and their comments.
- Welcome Email - When a user comments on your site, you send them a welcome email. Make it sound personal. A lot of people who join this blog and comment for the first time, get that email and they ask me how did I do that. It is a free plugin called Comment Relish.
- Link Love - Reward them for being a reader by checking out their sites and linking to them.
Comment Subscription
Have you ever noticed below when you comment there is a check box that says Subscribe to comments. Well if it is a really hot topic a lot of people subscribe to the comments. What happens exactly is that once someone else comments, they get an email, and people come back to to your site. The more often they come back, the more chances is that they subscribe to your site. A plugin that you need is right here called Subscribe to Comments
Contests
Holding contests on your site is a big traffic attractor, but if you require your users to subscribe to your site to enter is a big plus. Because people would do that to enter the contest, and there you have it. One more subscriber. I have one on going contest Pimp My Blog, and more to come soon
I have noticed contest to work like a charm.
Placement of RSS/Email Subscription
The theory is the easier you make it for your users, the more likely it is that they will subscribe. The more visible you make it for your users, the more likely they are to subscribe. In my opinion the best place to put your rss button is in the top right hand corner. Most bloggers would agree with me on that one. Taking it one step forward, you can allow email subscription. Most people just add a text link which is making it hard for your user. Give them an input field where they can simply type the email and click to subscribe. If you don’t know how to here is a tutorial for you. Another place you can add the email subscriber option is right below your posts. Yan did a study on his blog and he increased 60 subscribers in 7 days. Check out his study.
Social Media and Advertising
Last week I wrote about How Social Media made me from a nobody to a somebody. I think everyone should at least try one of the social media networks. I will say lets start with Digg (Ultimate Guide to use Digg). There are a lot more that I have discussed in my post about 13 ways I used to promote my blog to success.
Stealing Subscribers
Tough section as I call it. I think when you are commenting on other blogs, you are not only adding value to their blog, but by doing so you are stealing their users. That is why I always recommend people to comment on bigger blogs. Even better comment on all size blogs. Because the more the users see you, the more they are likely to head over to your site. I did this a lot at one time when I was a top commentator at both Shoemoney, and John Chow along with tons of others. Now I am at a good stable number, that I am focusing on my content more. But I will assure you that everyone have to start at that point to get exposure unless you can afford thousands of dollars to spend and buy advertisement everywhere. Same thing I say about Guest Blog Posts, I wrote all together two guest blog posts. One was at John Chow’s blog and other one was at The University Kid. The total together brought me a little less than 300 subscribers. So lets say John have over 33k subscribers at the time that I wrote the post. So I only got about 0.9% of John’s Subscribers, but hey little bit helps.
Future Plans
I have a few plans that I want to start once Balkhis is one year old that will be the end of Jan 2009. Hopefully by then we will see another face lift of Balkhis with a combination of news letter and more which makes Balkhis a bigger platform for bloggers.

Hey, I am Syed Balkhi, The guy who is behind Balkhis Inc. I entered the industry back in 2002 not knowing a single thing. I barely spoke English at that time. In the past six years, my language barrier has been eliminated. Aside from English, now I also speak html, and php. Along with the languages I have also managed to master a few arts. Art of web-designing started when I first entered. Messing around with photoshop, I learned how to create my first web design. Now I founded a web designing firm Uzzz Productions. After running numerous amount of websites in various niche, I have mastered the art of web-development. Now I am compiling a resource of what I already know, and what I am learning on this blog. This resource is to help me if I ever need a guide to look back to, and it is help my fellow webmasters.

Congratulations on your achievement!
My two month old blog has 21 subscribers now, growing slowly but fairly steadily. I’m not going for mass readership, but quality readership.

congratulations! 1800 is an amazing result, and it won’t be long now before you hit 5,000!
[...] Still unconvinced? Take a look at how Syed increased his subscribers to over 1800 in 10 months. [...]
I love the way you phrase blog commenting as “stealing subscribers”. Well, though I don’t look at it that way, I admit I’m guilty of stealing them too. Still I believe at the end of the day, what matters most is the kind of quality contents you bring to the table and that’s the key.
Thanks for the love yet again. I’ve just updated that article of mine as my way of reciprocating.
Yan
Thanks Yan. I try to link back to every great article that I like, and yours was one of them
Thanks, Syed. You have inspired me more with this article but I’m not too sure if I could get another 1500 in 4 months. Setting goals, right? I’ll keep that in mind.
Yan
great stuff as usual!
thanks,

Contests is my major method for attracting readers and subscribers (as well as great content). Currently I am running a competition where you can win $150 by commenting on my blog.
In the month of January prizes will be over $500 for the competition I am running. It is definately working.
In 6 months I have 300 subscribers. Maybe it 10 months I will have as many as you….hopefully
Yes I saw your contest. Wish you good luck on that.
Great work, Syed! That’s an impressive accomplishment. You give some good tips here. The key to increasing your RSS subscribers is by giving them a reason to return. It looks as thought that’s working out well for you!
Hehe yes it is. I try to to do that, and I know everyone else who does get the same results.
Is there a way to gain subscribers on a mixed bag blog? I find it hard to maintain loyal subscribers for long (since the posts are not focused on their main interest)
It becomes a problem when the posts are not focused. That is why you must pick a niche. If your blog is about tech reviews then review the technology. People who want to see the reviews will stick around. If they are getting bored with your review perhaps it is time to get adventurous. Contact companies ask them that you are willing to test their product. Like Crushing a usb drive underneath a Car as John Chow did it. I am sure Corsair got a lot of buyers after that.
I never heard of that. But knowing Chow, he’s bound to do stuff like that.
I’m planning on holding a contest on my blog to increase the subscribers.
I’m one of your subscribers, Mike. I love you as a person but I’m not so much into game and stuffs like that and that’s one of the reason I rarely participated in your blog. That’s just me anyway.
I do agree with Syed too that you might be spreading yourself too thin and fall into the “focus” trap.
Good luck, buddy.
Yan
I am still working out the subscriber situation, but there is a lot of information here to digest. Thanks!
Congratulations on your success! There are a lot of great tips here - Thank you! I was wondering if you have any tips up your sleeve that are more niche/category specific?
Nope not really. It is just experience and skills I guess
Good stuff, thanks. I think your blog post follows your own ‘write quality content’ rule.
Great post Syed. Commenting on blogs is a great way to get traffic to any site or blog!
Hands down it is one of the best way to do so for free.
How true Syed, that you have to keep on churning out quality stuff for your users. And tell you what, you have definitely succeeded in maintaining quality on your blog. And yes, this again a quality information, thanks for the info. Keep them coming.
Well I subscribed to your blog for 3 reasons:
1) This blog and you made a good first impression
2) You continue to write helpful posts
3) You have the pimp my blog contest as an incentive (lucky I subscribed because i won :))
Hehe weren’t you lucky
Setting goals is a really good idea, it helps you make money and achieve subscribers.
I became a subscriber about 3 months ago. I love reading for blog for the content. It is very helpful and I find it very interesting. Good Luck with your next goal!
Congratulations in your success!
You write a good content so it was a matter of time, that you gather many subscribers.
Good luck with your next goals!
Hey, congrats, and thanks for sharing this with us!
Found you through DP, and I think you really have done a good job. However, we must also consider that not all subscribers are really reading your blog. In addition, I think that it would be better if our subscribers will open our blogs which we can convert them to money.
You have great contents and it is not so surprising that you increased your subscribers.
Keep it up!
They are not reading your blogs on your blog, but they are reading it in their readers. As long as they know what I am writing about. Believe me when it is something like this, people always come out and comment
Thats great. My 3 months old blog has only 33 visitors. But you just need to have believe on your posts and thats all.
That would be a start, but make sure you read my post about 13 ways I promoted my blog because I don’t think without those techniques I would’ve reached this goal.
[...] Balkhis: How I increased my suscribers to over 1800 in 10 months [...]
I love the content on your site. I started a personal challenge to get 1000 visitors a day in 6 months before finding your blog. I think it will be very helpful for me.
I wish you much luck and that is a goal that you can accomplish
Thanks Yan. I try to link back to every great article that I like, and yours was one of them
All very good ideas to increase your opt ins. One of the best ways to boost your list is by creating an info product then using joint ventures. This method has high potential to increase your list fast because you would be pulling names from established lists.
