As our loyal readers probably already know, I was offered a position at The MathWorks, but regretfully had to decline the offer after some serious consideration. Everything about the job was fantastic, but there was the matter of relocation. Anyhow, the whole interview process was a great experience, so I wanted to share it so that all our readers can live vicariously through me. It would be difficult for me to write down all of my thoughts into one post, so instead you’ll be seeing a series of post on my MathWorks experience in the near future.

The first event that even made me think that working at The MathWorks was a possibility was when blinkdagger was featured on Doug Hull’s Pick of the Week on December 18th, 2007. After that event, Doug Hull and Scott Hirsh began to strategically plant ideas of working at The MathWorks into our brains. Doug would occasionally drop innocuous comments such as: “Great post Quan, when are you going to join us at The Mathworks?”, “Send me your resume, I’ll personally deliver it to HR!”, and “The MathWorks is the greatest place to work! I want to retire here.”

On April 10th, 2008, I took the first step in applying to the MathWorks by emailing my resume to Doug Hull. The first thing he pointed out was that I could improve my chances of getting hired if I correctly capitalized “Matlab” to “MATLAB”. After that little speed bump, he personally delivered it to HR. Fast forward to June 13th and I received my official offer letter from the MathWorks!

Throughout this entire period of time, I jotted down notes about the interview process, my thoughts and feelings, and my overall impression of things. In the next couple of posts, I will share my experiences by blogging about my MathWorks interview experience.

What to Expect in Future Posts

You can expect to see some tips and tricks that will help you on The Mathworks interview (or any interview in general). You will obtain a good idea about the interview process and how they go about choosing their candidates. Unfortunately, I will not be able to reveal the exact questions that were asked during my interview, but I can adapt my posts to give you a good idea about what you should and shouldn’t expect. So stay tuned!

Quach_southpark2.pngIn honor of Ken and Mike over at the MATLAB desktop, I have created a Southpark avatar for this series.

Quan is a practical jokester and enjoys playing basketball and DoTA. When not writing MATLAB tutorials, he is probably reading Doug’s Blog or sleeping (not as a result of reading Doug’s blog).
