Joe Biden (briefly) follows his conscience
The tenor of the presidential race almost turned back toward the positive last night. Democratic VP candidate Joe Biden went off the reservation in an interview with CBS anchor Katie Couric. The subject was a recent Obama campaign ad mocking Senator John McCain for his inability to use a computer. Biden had this to say:

"I thought that was terrible, by the way," Biden replied.

Couric pressed on, "Why'd you do it then?"

"I didn't know we did it, and if I'd had anything to do with it, we would have never done it," Biden said.

Bravo, Senator, thank you for the breath of fresh air.

Unfortunately, his conscience was overruled by the zealots running Obama's campaign. They took Joe out behind the woodshed for the progressive equivalent of a "come to Jesus" meeting. Within an hour of giving the interview he had issued a "clarification" via Obama's official press office:

"I was asked about an ad I'd never seen, reacting merely to press reports. As I said right then, I knew there was nothing intentionally personal in the criticism of Senator McCain's views which look backwards not forwards and are out of touch with the new economic challenges we face today. Having now reviewed the ad, it is even more clear to me that given the disgraceful tenor of Senator McCain's ads and their persistent falsehoods, his campaign is in no position to criticize, especially when they continue to distort Barack's votes on an issue as personal as keeping kids safe from sexual predators.

So much for taking the high road. It's the same old politics of personal destruction, relabeled as "change". To paraphrase his rediscovered verbosity, Biden is essentially saying Obama's attacks on McCain are OK because they believe McCain's attacks on Obama are even worse. Or to be more blunt, they're going to keep lying about McCain because McCain's ads may have exaggerated some of their policy positions.

For the briefest of moments Senator Biden followed his conscience. For his trouble he was reminded that he had already sold his soul, and there are no refunds.
