Sarah Palin gets up to speed on foreign affairs
The opening of the UN General Assembly tomorrow is providing Sarah Palin with an excellent opportunity to meet with a number of world leaders. Gov. Palin plans to have substantive talks with President Álvaro Uribe of Colombia and President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan (among others). Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger is heading up the team advising Gov. Palin on international affairs. Mr. Kissinger brings to the table a depth of knowledge that is second to none.

The meeting with Mr. Uribe should be particularly interesting. McCain and Palin are on record as supporters of the Columbia Free Trade Agreement. Various liberal factions and congressional Democrats have kept ratification of this vital treaty bottled up in committee. A McCain administration would put more pressure on Congress to stop wavering and bring an important ally like Columbia into a full trade partnership with the United States. (Senator Obama opposes ratification of the Columbia Free Trade Agreement.)

On this important issue Gov. Palin could not have found two better advisors than Mr. Kissinger and President Uribe. They will undoubtedly give her valuable perspective on our strategic relationship with Columbia, a relationship that is being frazzled by liberal demagoguery.

Governor Palin is a quick study with a keen political mind. She will emerge from this week's whirlwind tour of meetings with an even greater understanding of our nations' international relationships. This is her chance to really guage the nature of America's stature among the nations of our world. I think she will find much common ground with our many allies and garner useful knowledge of the challenges we will face over the next 4 years.
