Obama manipulating Iraq for political gain?

In a report from Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, during Obama’s recent tour of Iraq he made pointed attempts to stall any talk of withdrawl.

“He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington. However, as an Iraqi, I prefer to have a security agreement that regulates the activities of foreign troops, rather than keeping the matter open.”

Now, is it just me or is the role of Commander in Chief the job of the sitting President and not just the pretend one? Could it be that Obama is so sure that he has this “in the bag” that he’s trying to stack the deck ahead of the game so that he can paint a picture of Obama the hero and Bush the failure?

If so, I have to say that is pretty damned low and pathetic. Trumpeting early withdrawal from Iraq and pushing to stall behind the scenes would be just a TAD disingenuous don’t you think?

This quote hasn’t been substantiated yet. And why are you surprised that politicians use wars for political gains? John McCain similarly has been claiming to know how to capture Bin Laden. I wonder if he is waiting for an invitation from the White House. Reminds me of Nixon’s ’secret plan’ to win Vietnam.

John McCain somehow knowing how to capture BinLaden is not a good example seemingly taking on the role of President while on a tour of a war zone.

Seriously though… politicians do some low things but, if true, I would put that on my list.

Keeping soldiers in harms way for your own uncertain political glory? Come on… that pales in comparison to someone coming up with a plan to catch a fugitive terrorist.

If this was true, I’d agree with you, James. Pretty frigg’n disgustingly low.

However, this report from the NY Post was apparently a bit skewed in the way it was reported. (Isn’t wording wonderful?)

Records from the meeting (which wasn’t secret and aparently publicized when Obama visited Iraq) state that Obama’s comment was closer to “Don’t feel pressured in making a decission just because we have an election coming up.” Now, that type of request can be taken any way you want to, so what one believes about the man will be what determines the context that’s taken in.
