Natsume Rin Obsession

Posted on July 12, 2008 by super rats in Figure Review

He remembered the first day of class. Natsume Rin was the last to enter the classroom. She entered just a moment before he started to introduce himself to his students and take roll. He watched her find the last available seat in the back. Nobody said hello to her and she said hello to nobody. She stared out the window without looking at anything. He noticed it right away, how he felt bad for her, how he wanted to make things better for her. Rin seemed isolated from the other students and he wanted to help her. That was what ruined him.

It did start as a noble goal of a teacher trying to help his student. That’s what he thought, but he was lying to himself. As he lectured he walked up and down the aisles so that he had reason to be near her. He would turn his head slightly as he walked past her desk and take a deep breath to inhale her, holding Rin inside him for as long as he could. He began to invent reasons for her to see him after class, even going so far as to be particularly cruel when grading her papers, so he could offer to tutor her after school. He ached for her. What made it all worse was she did come after school without complaint in spite of how the grades he gave her was such bullshit, which fed his desire, her compliance with his suggestion, how she sat so close, he could lean over and breath her in, the swirl of fragrance from her shampoo would drown him as he tore the sweet smell of her scalp into him to embrace her with each deep pull of his breath. It calmed him to draw her inside him.

Maybe if he had looked at Rin like a normal man his age would when he sees an attractive high school girl and dismiss it with a “they didn’t look like that when I was in high school” and a quick scan of her body, the story would have ended with him being a good teacher helping a troubled student. But he didn’t and now he’s in trouble without an idea of how to get out.

Review of Kotobukiya’s Natsume Rin

Kotobukiya has made a cute 1:8 scale figure that looks appealing for either a Rin fan or school uniform fans. The dreaded Koto sheen seems to be absent from the skin, though there is a slight gloss on her clothes and hair, but nothing horrifying. The paint is very clean, stays in its lines and not much debris at all. On the downside, the shading is pretty basic.

Rin is screw mounted to her white round base — so far none of these one foot mount figures has been a problem for me, though this is my first Koto single foot mount. She comes with an optional scary cat face and cat ears, though I don’t see why I’d want to ever switch to that mode. I admit I’m pretty much anti cat-girl, but the scary cat face is totally unattractive, so much so it’s not worth photographing.

It’s a decent sculpt, though the legs seem somewhat awkward in shape from some angles, but looks good from what should be the normal viewing angle.

Her skirt is really short. Way too short to be practical or functional to cover her pantsu, so there’s a mild pervy factor to the figure without being too obvious about it. In any case her normal face is attractive and seems to fit the feel I’ve seen of Rin from some of the illustrations I’ve seen online.

Other Stuff

I really like Rin’s character design from the illustrations I’ve seen, but if that were the only reason to get a figure there’s a bunch more figures I’d have, so can’t really say that was why I got this figure in particular. Other than the one foot moving pose, which we’ve been seeing a lot lately, it’s not an unusual (in a good way) figure. Is it the red eyes? Don’t know but I really do like that reddish eye color she’s got. Sadly, this must be feeding some secret fondness I have for school uniforms.

Shino has some shots of Rin in nasty cat-girl mode if you’re curious. Mr. Spa at Foobarbaz has also reviewed Natsume Rin. He goes into more detail with his photos than I do, so for a true inspection I suggest going there.

Despite being a HUGE Key fan, I haven’t really gotten into Little Busters or any of their characters. The same goes for the figures that are currently out as well, none sem all that appealing to me.

I never played little busters, but I like their character design too :) This one has a nice pose, but I hope she won’t lean..

I find the pictures are a bit over-contrasted, but I’m sure they are intended that way :)

Never trusted the figures supported by one leg. The quality looks good enough for Koto. Not stellar by any means but it’ll suffice for the price. Hope you enjoy displaying this cutie.

Quite like the pose of this figure. Like the second pic too, feels like she’s running from something.

I only know little busters from the youtube vids.
My problem with my one leg figure is the ‘leaning figures‘ problem. Did you have this problem? Does she stands firmly in the base?

Adun, a couple of the girl characters designs for Little Busters seem more freaky than cute, but I do like Rin.

~ron, it’s meant to be that way, but I guess it’s going to turn some people off.

Yamcha, she’s on my desk guarding my notebook.

James, I can see that, I’m still not sure why I got Rin myself, though I do like it.

Blowfish, it’s scrapbook paper that you can find at crafts stores. It comes in like 10×10 inch (or something like that) squares, which makes it rough for doing a full shot. You can use wrapping paper too, but one sheet of scrap paper is cheaper than buying a whole roll of wrapping.

Valho, from nasty otaku who are trying to look at her pantsu no doubt.

Hirvine, none of my one leg figures lean. Rin is mounted with a metal screw.

Persefone Loki, there are a lot of figures posed like that nowadays…on the other hand it makes it easier for you to not buy too many figures.

I noticed your last few shootings have high contrast and saturation… and I like them.

Rain, yeah I like pushing the contrast and saturation up quite a bit.

Excellent photos! I noticed that you have started to use very high contrast shadow and light. It really brings a different mood with your images! Though watch out on the type of mood you are bringing. Use it in moderation for figures that should have that mood, as the dark shadows conceal a lot of details which make it difficult to properly review.

Excellent photos! Definitely a unique lighting technique that takes it away from the “stock photo” look!

    Mood lighting. ^^

I have thought about going unnatural with the contrast and saturation and how it impacts something from a review standpoint. I have felt that if it enhances the feel of the character, it’s fine to distort a little, especially if there are “review” type shots in there somewhere.
