iPod Touch Volume Glitch
Apple April 13th, 2008While on a flight from Auckland, New Zealand to Adelaide, Australia yesterday morning, I was listening to music on my iPod touch for the duration of the flight.
After a few hours, I discovered this glitch with the volume adjustment slider, which was presenting the volume change the same way as the Mac does in OSX. Check out the video for the interesting find.

This is what the iPhone volume looks like when you change it via the buttons on the side of the phone (when not in ipod mode, otherwise it just slides the slider up and down). Maybe this has something to do with it…

As i put on flickr, this is due to the OS X foundations of the iphone (& touch) OS. Apple literally took the base foundations for OS X and put them on the iPhone, this being one of them. Thats also why the iPhone has wonderful power management, etc thanks to its OS X Kernal foundation

Well.. the very same overlay also appears when the iPod is in the dock and you change the volume with the Apple Remote. The question is: why did it appear?

While it probably isn’t *technically* a glitch, it’s definitely unnecessary; there’s a reason a volume slider is there.
Edit: Actually, maybe it is. Did it just show up arbitrarily, or is this a recurring thing?
@Liam: It’s true that the iPhone is running “OS X”, but the volume bezel isn’t a base foundation. That’s probably part of the Aqua frontend, meaning it was likely rewritten for the iPhone (like it was for Windows on Boot Camp).

Yer this happens to me when mine is in the dock. I think this looks really cool. Love the flickr video

Ehhh… can someone point out the glitch? Am I missing something?? (I have neither a Touch nor iPhone, so not sure what SHOULD be happening…)

@Gordon: There shouldn’t be a little volume overlay on the screen - the one with the audio icon and the volume level indicator.

I’ve had that speaker icon glitch before. I think it’s intended for iPod speaker docks, so you can use the Apple remote and see the volume from a distance.

i just tried changing the volume with the remote while playing music and docked and it didnt show a overlay… just can see the volume slider move.

Glenn, I’ve also discovered the same thing with my iPod touch! I’ll try to play more with it to discover other iPhone native features.

That is pretty weird, I’ve actually had the same thing happen to me on my iPhone before, I was listening to the iPod app and when I used the slider that overlay showed up. I would guess that it is a known issue that later updates will fix.

Has anyone figured out how to reproduce it? It happened to me a few days ago, and I want to see it again.

You know, that’s so strange, I just discovered that a couple I days ago myself; seemed odd, but, I can’t seem to have my
iPod do it again.

UPDATE =P
I’m bored and could use a good Apple/photographers blog to read.

I noticed the other day that mine was telling me I needed an EDGE or Wifi connection to view youtube vids….now it just says there’s no connection. Strange.

April 24th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Glenn,
C’mon. It’s been almost a month since your last *real* post. I thought you were trying to post 2-3 times a week?
April 27th, 2008 at 2:49 am
Please post something, it’s been more than a week, and you haven’t really posted anything longer than a paragraph for longer…

its a glitch with ipods “MobileMusicPlayer.app” application the ipod runs a modified version of it that blocks out the volume overlay. When you select Music from the ipod home screen it passes a parameter to the application telling it to load the modified version that blocks the overlay. There must be a glitch when it passes the parameter. Iphone on the other hand only blocks out the overlay when you use the slider.

I’ve been able to replicate this briefly by adjusting the volume slider while rotating the iPod to its horizontal position. As @brad said, it moves the “block” above the overlay when you flip it.

Thanks Hector.

occasionaly when I start my touch the screen will show the icon as if I am changing the volume, even though I can’t from the home page.
November 8th, 2008 at 7:11 am
I figured out how to activate the glitch: move the volume while you press the home button. The icon should show up
