Speed Racer - first footage

The Speed Racer movie is due for release tomorrow. the 9th of May (in the UK at least). I hope to go and see it at the Imax cinema in London. It’s the latest film from the Wachowski’s, the people who created the Matrix trilogy, V for Vendetta, and Bound. All of which have a style that is distinctly theirs.

Speed Racer is their first proper foray into family entertainment, but at the same time it’s not straying too far from the comic book roots that the Wachowski brothers love.

The game is, predictably, built upon the racing aspect of the movie. Based upon the video below the game takes a lot of inspiration from Nintendo’s own F-Zero series, and maybe a tiny smidgen of Wipeout and ExtremeG (XG3?). Basically it’s a super fast futuristic racer.

The colourful cartoony stylings are perfect for the targeted platforms (Wii, DS, and PS2) and they fit the film very nicely. The racing has a great sense of speed and the crashes are suitably dramatic. One to watch for sure, especially since the Wii is a little starved for quality racing games. I really hope this does a Star Wars: Episode 1 pod racer on us and is actually enjoyable
