What’s With The Hiatus + Desktop Vibes
Blogging, Personal April 28th, 2008
It has been a while since my last entry. I’ve barely had a moment to myself at home for two months, back and forth across the Tasman on a very regular basis has made I’d hard to get into any sort of realistic working routine. Now at home for another four weeks before I set off again, I’m motivated to put some ideas and thoughts I’ve been mulling over for some time into action. About damn time too.
What is the go with the blog. I’ve been thinking it over for some time now, and discussed my plans with ProBlogger Darren Rowse in Melbourne last week. Whats the go? Well, a few things actually.
Firstly, taking Darren’s advice I’m launching a new blog - Desktop Vibes. Desktop Vibes will be my new home for technological based content, the decision to move away from the name based domain name and move to something more standard has a few reasons behind it. This includes the ability to bring in guest writers into the fold, an easier and more structured path to building a brand, and the ability to write abut things I wouldn’t have normally done with the site attached to the GlennWolsey.com domain name.
Moving to Desktop Vibes for technological content and leaving this weblog for personal based entries will allow me to focus on the following:
More quality content
More specific niche focus
Ability to build a brand
Positions for guest writers
Please do head over to Desktop Vibes, bookmark both the site and the new RSS feed. I do still plan to keep content flowing through this domain, and have many planned changes/features for the future.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to pop me an email. While this hasn’t been an easy move to make, it’s something which has been cooking for some time now, and I believe the short term pain involved with result in long term gain, for both you and me.
Finishing Note: Do keep an eye on Desktop Vibes over the next few days for the official public theme release of the GlennWolsey.com WordPress theme. After hundreds of requests, I’ve decided to give something back to the community and make this theme public. Theme could be up as early as this evening. Buckle up, it’s going to be an exciting ride.

Sounds like an intresting idea. I would create an original WordPress theme for Desktop Vibes instead of using the 5thirtyone theme though.

Looks good, though you might need to do something with the header it seems kinda plain. But a good read regardless.

Agreed with the above two comments. A custom theme will definitely help you out a lot. But you probably know this already and likely have it in store.
As for the move, I had a feeling you would do this at some point. It makes sense, and would definitely help to focus your content, but the reason why I liked your blog so much was because of the personal touch you placed on all of the content. I hope you continue to do this with Desktop Vibes. I’m now curious what kind of content you’re going to be putting on GlennWolsey.com and whether it will take a back seat to your new blog.
Regardless, good luck to you. :)

Wow Glenn. I can’t imagine this being an easy move after all the time you’ve put into GlennWoley.com over the years.
DesktopVibes looks good. Definitely something I’ll subscribe to and look forward to reading from. However, I hope that you keep pushing out content on this blog - whatever topic that may be. You no longer really need to pump out tech stuff on this blog because you have DesktopVibes, and so you are free to pretty much write about whatever you want.
As some of the other commenters mentioned, I hope that you keep both of these blogs personal, much as Darren Rowse has kept ProBlogger and DPS personal. Write about tech topics, but add some personality to them. That is what makes GlennWolsey.com so enjoyable to read today.
I’m sure you know what you’re doing and will do a good job.
Good Luck. :)

Oh, one more question just crossed my mind. Will you be cross-posting select articles from DesktopVibes to GlennWolsey.com with the header:
“– Please head over to Desktop Vibes for the new location of this article. Desktop Vibes is Glenn Wolsey’s new home on the web for technological content. –”
Or is this just a temporary change?

I think the idea behind it is great, it will definitely gain you some new readership as I don’t think personal blogs will ever get as popular as a tech blog with more than one editor. Speaking of editors, I wonder if you will be needing any? Or are you just planning on dropping in the occasional guest post? Either way good luck, I think it will be a success and hope it is. :)
