Welcome to Maine… the land of thought crimes. We know what you’re thinking and for that, you’re a felon!
A local State Representative (a Democrat, mind you) is attempting to strengthen the laws on, get this… “Visual Sexual Aggression“. Yes, that IS correct, they have a law on the books to protect your precious kiddies from visual sexual aggression. You know that creepy guy in the park who doesn’t ever seem to have a kid, but has never really DONE anything other than look creepy around a playground? Well according to this amendment to the law, he could now be classified a Class D-C FELON in the State of Maine depending on the age of the child he “peered” at.
Recently there were numerous complaints of a man watching small children enter a bathroom… yes ENTER a bathroom. He never actually did something but by god, he was LOOKING AT THEM go through the door of a bathroom. According to Rep. Dawn Hill, this is just abhorrent behavior and since nothing could be done, a new law needed to be in place to stop people from “peering” at kids.
“Hello sir, we’re the thought police and rather than ask you to leave, we will be arresting you on felony charges of Visual Sexual Aggression and classifying you as a predator.”
When I was a kid and my parents took me to the playground to play… there was this novel concept called watching your kids play and keeping an eye on them. If ANYTHING came up, such as this creepy man, they simply took me by the hand and left. It’s REALLY a simple concept.
Yes peering at children is creepy and could and usually would lead the individual to further innapropriate and ACTUALLY illegal behaviors, but how in all that is sane and rational can you expect me to believe you can prove motive behind the way someone was looking at someone else. Simple, you apply eye-witness testimony and filter it through an overly zealous prosecuting attorney and BAM, you’ve just created a pedofile out of a possibly looky-loo. Sure, you may be able to nab some people who were ACTUALLY attempting to proceed beyond “peering” at kids, but are we REALLY willing to submit this country to preventative accusations. Someone is LOOKING suspicious so they’re automatically guilty of something?
I know I’m not. They might be creepy but you can ask them to move along or leave yourselves.
