Project Nissan 240SX: Day 5
04.18.08 - 11:23pm
Sorry about the lack of updates, I’ve been busy with a slew of things. I have made some serious progress both with Project 240SX and with benching. For the last few days I’ve been prepping the car for the engine to be pulled. There’s so many little things that have been holding me up that haven’t been post-worthy but tomorrow I should have some nice pictures.
Progress
I spent about 90 minutes today just chopping out my exhaust. Whoever previously owned this car decided it’d be better to weld the entire exhaust in rather than use the typical flanges you seen on most cars. Due to the fact that the exhaust manifold to downpipe connection is a solid mass of rust, this caused me a lot of unnecessary stress and bruised knuckles from punching the pavement. I ended up having to use my angle-grinder to literally grind through the exhaust right before the catalytic converter. Now I simply need to chain up the block, lift it slightly, and then remove the engine mounts and transmission bracket. After this I should be able to wiggle the engine out of the bay, hopefully I have everything else detached else it’s coming out with the engine.

The Plan
After pulling the engine I plan on spraying the engine bay with some cleansing agents and giving the paint a good scrub down. Once I have all the gunk cleaned out I’ll do my best to touch-up the rusted spots. After that I’ll clean the underside of the car with a wire brush and some elbow grease. Hopefully the new engine will be in my possession next week after which I can prep the engine as much as possible and then slide it into the engine bay. Lots of pictures tomorrow, should be fun.
Might want to consider renting a sand blaster for the engine bay and underside. A lot quicker and might actually save you money in the long run. Just make sure to protect the panels on the exterior, though if y were to scratch it up it wouldn’t be the biggest deal since I assume you’re planning on having the body painted at some point.
Happy to help, didn’t want to send you an e-mail because I figure you get enough.
Very nice. I’ve wanted an S13 for a looong time, though I never got one. Luckily I had a few friends back in the day, who were kind/drunk enough to let me drive theirs (I was sober). Since then my taste has gravitated more towards an S14 wich I find much sexier. Despite apearance they’re pretty much the same car mechanically, although I acctually prefer the S14’s ride and can’t for the life of me figuer out why. I still put both cars in my affordable car wish list and am really jealous :) How much did you pick it up for? Are you gonna stick with the KA or do a swap? Also, please tell me you’ve seen the Getaway in Stockholm films!
