Ontario MNR Chasing Rainbows

Posted on 11 April 2008

They are using small radio transmitters that have been ‘placed’ inside Rainbow Trout. The trout were taken from the Saugeen River and its really too bad I missed the call to go help. The story is posted in, The Sun Times, and it is fascinating. You must read it. The purpose of this high tech tracking system will be to ‘follow’ the fish via helicopter (I’m calling shotgun) and find out where they are spawning. This will allow the MNR and fishing groups to help focus their attention on protecting vital spawning grounds. The end result means more fish for everybody! The Sun Times article specifically said that,

The project is intended to give fisheries managers a better idea where rainbow trout, or steelhead, from Lake Huron spawn in the Saugeen River and its tributaries. It will also tell MNR officials how well fishways upstream at dams at Walkerton and Maple Hill work. Entire Article Here

The whole capture and tracking process is incredible. Read the article for all the details. The website also has a great picture slide show of the entire process. You can watch that here.

Many thanks to the MNR and the volunteers at the Ontario Steelheaders Club and the Golden Triangle Salmon and Steelheaders Club for making this happen.

Great Work!

Don’t git yer hopes too high, there. They can’t possibly tag ‘em all. You’ll still have to “fish”. Har-har!
