Refreshing Photography
Photography March 11th, 2008Last evening I arrived back in Auckland, New Zealand after spending twelve days in Australia on board the Pacific Star cruise liner, and three days in Sydney on the tail end. While holidaying has left me refreshed and energized, it also opened up many new photographic opportunities along the way - cruising was a perfect holiday to continue my photographic development, as new photo opportunities arose as each day presented itself. A new port meant new sights to see, and more importantly, more chance to make images.

I discovered an interest in many new areas of photography while away. Including candid, landscape, and architecture. While at home and seeing the same scenes each day I became accustomed to my surroundings, and my photography developed a very basic pattern to it. Visiting new locations really helped me open my eyes to other potential shots. I feel the getaway has been a huge help in terms of refreshing my photographic eye while opening up a different aspect I can put in-to action back in my home town.

Get out with your camera, venture somewhere new. Book a flight to a remote location, head out for a week long road trip. Simply head away from your usual surroundings and discover what’s out there - when you arrive back home, your eyes will have opened to many new photographic opportunities which didn’t appear before your trip.
Now - where’s that 135mm prime lens. I’m off for a walk.

I know what you mean when you are in one place for a very long time you think you have taken all the images but then you go away and take some snaps of somewhere els and now you see new things.

Funny you say that. Melbourne is where I would be interested in living, ahead of Sydney. Do you know where lysterfield is?

Glenn - when you move to Australia, can I have your house? I dream of living in New Zealand.
Nice post btw, you inspire me every time you do one of these photography things.

You visited Sydney!! Would have been lovely to meet you. That aside I believe I know the exact spot where you took the Port Douglas shot. Went there in 2007 what a pretty spot!! Nice ones Glenn.

There were a few requests to meet up with people in Sydney, but sadly, I ran out of time to see anyone. Next time I’m over, I’ll arrange a meet-up with a few people. I’ll be in Australia at least two more times this year.

yes, lysterfield is a fair way out from the CBD, in the eastern suburbs why?

Just curious, the girl I met on the cruise (Rebecca) lives out that way. It’s around 60KM from the airport, just looked it up on Google Maps.

Funny, I went to NZ last year traveled around Taupo, Rotorua and Aukland, and I seriously think NZ is just so much more photogenic, compared to Australia.
Sure we have some nice photographic opportunities here but NZ ownes when it comes to landscape photog. I mean you guys have volcanic areas, proper forests, and everything else we have.
The green/bush here is dull whereas in NZ its this bright vibrant green.

Bad thing that you did take a cruiser around the Caribbeans sea, you would know great people and well might be you would know were i live, its a small island that don’t even appear in the mad lol.
Am glad that you had a great trip, in my case am so so rounded whit see that its became like something normal to tooo. i don’t see joke on it.
You know sometime i see tourism that don’t even get out good of the plane and they are already in the sea, its so funny for me and i have it there every day and i don’t so and take bath.

I know that feeling Glenn, but hadn’t articulated (or even put my finger on it) quite as well as you did. The new and unexpected always generates the freshest photography. I just got back from three weeks in Italy with my wife, shooting anything and everything, and in looking back at the body of work, it’s amazing how different it looks than what I expected. That’s what makes travel photography such an exciting medium.
Love your blog, by the way. Keep shooting and give Photoshelter a try if you haven’t already. Your stuff is good enough and fresh enough to be sold as stock on their site: psc.photoshelter.com.
