The Anime Blog Poll: What’s Your Favorite Japanese Food?

Posted by: Rachel In: Japanese Recipes| Polls

November kicks off the Eating Season with the biggest food-related holiday of the year: Thanksgiving. In honor of that belly busting, buckle-loosening, girth-widening day, I thought we could talk food, Japanese food that is.

Unlike many popular Western foods, traditional Japanese foods are low in fat, high in vegetable content, and sans dairy. This coupled with portion control means that eating traditional Japanese foods the way they were originally prepared and eaten, can help you be fit and healthy.

But forget all that health mumbo-jumbo, Japanese food is delicious! I’ve developed an addiction to and obsession with wagashi which I indulge about once a week. Sushi and tempura are my fave eat-out Japanese foods and if I had the cash, I’d be eating sushi once a week too. At home I love to prepare all manner of noodle dishes and sweets. If I had to peg down one of my favorite foods, I’d say wagashi and that’s as concise as I could get.

Is there some snack, dessert, or meal that makes you drool? Are you addicted to a certain Japanese food and get shifty-eyed and twitchy when you haven’t had your fix in a while? What’s your favorite Japanese food?

I dont really have a favorite but I did try squid jerky my grandpa brought back from japan. It was alright not something I would have everyday.

  2. Rachel says:

@Andrew, I really like ika (squid). I especially like the “spicy” variety. Good on you for trying something new ^^b.

  3. Chris N says:

Ramen, all the way. I like Saba Shioyake as well. And, of course, sushi and sashimi.

  4. anungcamui says:

    sushi!!!
    chicken katsu!!!
    sukiyaki!!!
    i love Japanese food!

  5. 0rion says:

    UNAGI!!

Also, I would probably go stark raving mad if I could get some good yakisoba every once in a while. Fortunately there’s a nearby place which makes the stuff extremely well, or I’d probably have long since been confined to the loony bin.

  6. griever says:

Hmm…that’s a hard one. Although I like traditional Japanese food, I find the hybridizations more interesting. Like their version of curry or stew.

  7. Emily says:

    POCKY!! And anything tempura-style. :-)

  8. Nicole says:

It’s all about the curry ramen ;) Sounds strange, but it is sooo good!

  9. Rachel says:

@Chris, I lovvvvve saba! Yet, I’ve never had Saba Shioyake. Perhaps I can’t find it anywhere due to my locale. I can’t even purchase mackerel at the local fish markets so making it might be difficult.

    @anungcamui , me too!

@Orion, oh yeah, unagi rocks!! I could totally eat a whole fillet by myself and not feel bad for not sharing. Grilled eel is damn good!

@griever, I really like curry but we don’t eat it so much since I’m the only big curry fan in the house.

@Emily, tempura is delish, but I’d be big as house if I ate it as much as I’d like to, i.e., every other day ^^.

@Nicole, no, no, not strange at all to be luv’n the curry ramen.

  10. julieho says:

  11. Rachel says:

@julieho, are there any good Japanese restaurants in London?
