Growl is a notification system for OSX that allows applications to send notifications for certain events, providing you with new information without you having to switch from the application you’re already in. After a couple years of languishing with a few bugs and memory leaks development finally kicked in again.

This release, which is kind of like 0.8, 0.9, 1.0 and 1.1 all rolled in to one, fixes a number of outstanding issues, adds a sorely missed system wide notification positioning system and adds close buttons on notifications when the mouse hovers over them. The release notes contains the complete list of new additions and bug fixes.

Growl is a must have is you are an OSX user. It is one of the first applications that I install upon opening up a fresh Mac. Growl is definitely well worth it in my humble opinion.

Growl is great and the new version adds some nice features. I use it within various applications such as Adium, but we’re also looking to integrate it into our own software. I’d definitely recommend anyone who hasn’t tried it to give it a go as it does add to the user experience.

I wish there were some better themes for it. I was using one I found on the internet called NotifyOSX up until this release, but 1.1 isn’t compatible with it. I just want one which blends in a bit better, and isn’t bezel.

I agree that the themes leave a little to be desired and could use some work. Personally, I find “smoke” to be a perfect fit for the way that *I* work. It blends in nicely in my workspace and does not distract me from what I am doing.

Nonetheless, Growl could definitely use some better themes. Especially with all the “designers” using Macs, one would think that there would be no shortage of themes. Guess not!

I do appreciate the new close buttons. Stops you having to click on them and therefore switching application to get rid of them.
