Snap Previews Revisited

Last November I implemented Snap Preview Anywhere functionality for the site. It has been a little over two months since I had done so and I am wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on Snap Preview Anywhere and my using it here.

There appears to be some major disdain for SPA being hurled online. I think the Snap Preview Anywhere tipping point has been reached. When SPA was first launched it was a novelty. Lately, however, it has grown to annoy more users than not. Heilemann, Kottke, Gruber and many more folks are advocating the removal of SPA because it is doing more harm than good.

I still have Snap Preview Anywhere enabled here, though I am very open to disabling it if that is what the majority of you believe is the best move to make. So what do you think? Keep SPA or not?

I say turn it off. I find it kind of annoying, personally.

My personal preference is also in favour of turning it off.

I think it saves time, keep it on.

I personally have the site blocked on my computer so that it never shows up. For the sake of other people, I woud suggest turning it off.

I also find it quite annoying…so…please turn it off!

I like the Snap Previews. They save time and clicks. Please keep them on.

Personally, I used the options menu to increase the delay before the bubble shows to 1 sec, so it’s less sensitive.

Lastly, those who dislike Snap previews can disable them from showing on any page they visit by using Options->Disable All.

Get rid of them. They’re horribly annoying, especially for those of us that are still sadly stuck on dialup connections.

And as for turning them off in the options - this doesn’t work. At least, not for me, nor for three other people I’ve had try it. They just pop back up on next visit.

Off! Horribly annoying.

It’s a bit annoying, though informative. It tells a lot about how the page is designed and can make go to the page just to appreciate the layout.
But for me it’s kind of useless as i prefer to enter the page for the content because the preview is so small that there really isn’t much more than the layout to checkout.
It’d rather be more useful to get a bubble with the latest news on the RSS Feed of the site than the preview of it (Is this already implemented? Am I giving ideas? Do it now!)
Anyway, this is a “technology showcase blog” Steve, why not move on to a new step and implement something better and new?

Regards

I say off, because I think they’re misleading, really. Not all design-handicapped sites are bad; in fact, some of the most interesting to read sites sometimes look like utter crap. A small visually thumbnail tells you nothing outside of what a site appears to be; this is only worthwhile in a design gallery, I think.

very strange and fun idea but I have to go with Lelia above, they can be very misleading as the thumbnails dont seem to update fast enough anyway and trying to glean some idea of a sights “interestingness” (crap, don`t sue me please!!!) based on the thumbnail is a bit of a struggle to put it mildly!
Switched `em off now! (I hope!)

I’m not a fan of the Snap Previews. Find them just as annoying as those keywords ads. :/

But that’s me and my mouse wandering habits. :)

I don’t care. If I had to choose, I’d say YAY instead of NAY. They don’t bother me.

I personally find them a sudden distraction, especially when reading blogs and the like. Those using Firefox have the choice of using things like Google Preview and other thumbnail-including add-ons.

Please keep them off, or perhaps create a page shortcut down to the links at the bottom of your blog entries instead, as an alternative to leaving them out completely?

I find it unhelpful to say the least.

Perhaps a variation on a link-improvement plugin would be more helpful, like a thumbnail and/or description list of links at the bottom of the article, or something with a text description/news feed instead of thumbnails?

I highlight text with my mouse to read it, they get in the way of that which means im less likely to read the whole post. I say turn them off. Not that they dont have their place, on a links page maybe?

Hi Scott,
I think its a great idea, also it enhances the User Experience, my main concern is if its 100% accessible up to Level AAA (WCAG 1.0) , if it is then keep it , if it isn’t then remove it.

Chris
