Register Your Blue: Walleye

Posted on 23 August 2007

fins2.jpgAs posted earlier this spring, I shared some photos with our visitors that showed a couple of ‘blue’ walley the Triple L Fishing Guys caught up in Northern Ontario. The cool, blue hue intrigued me and I looked for some answers. You can read the post and what I found out here.

To summarize, the blue tinge is just unique variation in the walleye’s ’slime’ coating. Researcher Wayne Schaeffer (University of Wisconsin) is looking into the matter and he would appreciate some intel from anyone who has caught a blue walleye. Follow this link to get there and visit the site. I will be posting the details on your site, Wayne!

Just returned from a fishing trip to Lake Natakim (Lac Lecointre) in Quebec. Caught a number of blue walleye. The fish are quite blue and when put into a pail of water they give the water a distinct blue hue. Also, the “blues” seem to attack our lures harder, and give a better fight than do the “yellows”. The distinction is so pronounced that you can usually guess that you have a “blue” on long before you see the fish. I’ve been fishing on Natakim for ~25 years and have always caught “blues”, a beautiful fish.
