My Top 5 Smallmouth Bass Lures

Posted on 06 August 2007

If I had to fish an unfamiliar lake for these bronze colored predators the following artificial lures would be first to pull out of my tackle box.

picture-12.png#1 Original Rapala Floater (Blue)

I have tried other colors but the blue seems to do the best for me along Lake Vernon’s shores. This lure catches them trolling or casting. I have even let it float on the surface with a bit of action from my rod tip and bass will ravage it from below. The middle treble hook on mine is removed to make it easier to unhook the bass.

Super Spot#2 Cotton Cordell Super Spot (Silver)

I remember one beautiful summer night where I anchored off a rocky island point and casted this lure out and enticed several bass into striking. Giving the lure some extra rattle on my retrieve (by pulling/jerking on my fishing rod) sweetened the pot.Mister Twister

#3 Mister Twister (White)

Put on a jig head on it or ‘dress-it-up’ a spoon with with it and you have yourself a deadly combination combination!

Kwikfish#4 Kwikfish (Yellow)

There is still an old stump in Vernon where, as a kid, I would cast a yellow one of these by it and could catch some huge bass. The action is unique and acts as dynamite for bass. There are less hooks on them now, I remember 4 sets of trebles.

I was trolling with this spoon once and hooked into my biggest bass of all time. It was in the 4 - 5 lb range. Granted, I accidentaly caught it out of season (I was fishing for trout) and I had to release it. It can still work now.

I’d probably keep your #2, though I’m a fan of Berkely’s lipless crankbaits over the Cordell. The rest of my top 5 would be:

    - Suspending Jerkbait - Smithwick Roge/Lucky Craft Pointer

    - Tube Jig

    - Berkely Gulp Minnow on a Drop-shot

    - #4 Mepps Aglia Inline Spinner in Black w/ Yellow spots (for when nothing else will catch ‘em shallow)

I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve never fished a Kwikfish. I’ll give one a try.
