MNR Budget Takes Another Hit

Posted on 29 March 2007

It seems the Ontario Government, is to cut more money from the Ministry of Natural Resources. They are cutting $36 million from budget weary department. This, despite talk of an endangered species act that they might want to enforce. The Government must be relying on our fishing and hunting license fees to support more than hunting and fishing efforts.

That ’stinks’ for Outdoorsmen. We pay more and get less. The problem is NOT the MNR itself, but it is the budget makers within the Government.

Parry Sound.com reports that,

“An hour before the budget was announced Thursday afternoon Mr. Miller questioned MNR minister David Ramsay about the province’s inadequate funding for conservation officers. In response Mr. Ramsay said the government is doing its job to protect the province’s natural resources.

“I walked across the street and into the lockup where staff reviewed the budget and said ‘What’s the MNR budget?’ they said it was down (and I said) ‘Are you kidding me?”’ said Mr. Miller.

He pointed out that not only is the budget cut by $36 million, from $762 million in 2006/2007 to $726 million, but that the workload could increase with a proposed species-at-risk bill amendment. Entire Article Here.

Of course…there may be another side story. Comment below if you have any insight.

Assuming it is true, it would be nice we could think of a fundraising event for the MNR. If you have any ideas for this list them below. Maybe we could pay for some of the stocking fees in our area? I will put $100 down on some trout fingerlings or fuel for the fish to be delivered to Muskoka . Can I get a seconder?! Maybe we could make something happen. What could be some fundraising ideas? Pies? Car Washes? Comment below.
