Raining Cats and Dogs

Posted on Friday 4 January 2008

Ever wonder where “it’s raining cats and dogs” came from? Well I did. And apparently it’s an idiom Shrouded In Mystery.

According to a couple of sources, there are something like five possible explanations. They range from the incomprehensibly mythological, to the morbid but plausible explanation that “at one time the streets of British towns were so poorly constructed that many cats and dogs would drown whenever there was a storm; people seeing the corpses floating by would think they had fallen from the sky, like the proverbial rains of frogs.” Link.

I like the whole biblical end-of-days feel to the latter explanation, so we’ll go with that.

Plus since I just scooped one off the garage floor, I guess I could legitimately say it’s raining rats. Whatever. It’s wet and windy here, and I have the data to prove it.

Click image to enbiggen. The data within is updated dynamagically.

In the last 24 hours the goldridge sandy loam we’re blessed with over here in the Russian River has soaked up over 3 1/2 inches of rain and wind speeds have reached peaks of 30 mph. Much of Santa Rosa is without power, and outages have spread down to at least San Jose.

No enbiggening is possible with this image. Don’t bother to click.

Floridians and anyone else in the Gulf states can kindly stop pointing and laughing now. This is end-times weather for us in California.

But it looks like everything will be fine. If you’re curious about the state of the vineyard, you can click here and follow along vicariously through the miracle of the internet and our awesome Ranch Systems mesh weather station.

Just watch out for the rats.
