I guess I wasn’t surprised, since it needed to happen in order for wimpy-Simon to become the uber-Simon in the future. Now, the question is how he’s going to get there in 18 more episodes. Perhaps there will be a time lapse of some sort, and we won’t get to see every step of his transformation? Knowing Gainax, this may very well happen.
Perhaps a more important question is how Simon and the Gurren-Dan go from battling beastman armies on an insignificant wasteland planet to waging stellar warfare against the combined might of the universe. I’m not really seeing how the scope is going to expand to a galactic scale in just 26 episodes without some insanely large leaps of logic or time.
I suppose the mystery of how Simon goes fro zero to epic is what motivates me to continue watching. I enjoyed the comedy of the earlier episodes immensely, but I don’t see that element ever returning.

I was a bit bummed with this episode, most likely because I had my expectations all messed up. I really didn’t expect the mood to turn so serious all of a sudden and it caught me a bit of guard. And just like you point out the key factor to what made the earlier episodes so much is gone from now on.
I made a post saying I would never watch this show again after seeing this episode, as I was quite upset but I did actually watch past it and while I might need some time adjusting I think it’s probably still watchable. :P
The real question is whether Simon will end up with the girl AND the axe (perhaps nodachi in this case).
My money is on a threesome. In the final episode Simon will defeat the beastking, get his daughter -and- the hot babe of the show, Yoko, who always was a closet shotacon. Ultimate victory.
