What Technology Did You Buy In 2007?
Personal December 20th, 2007Last year I wrote a similar post, here’s the 2007 edition of what technology I’ve purchased this year. All-in-all, I spent more than I wish I had on technology this year, I’m expecting 2008 to be a slightly quieter year. I’m happy with my current setup and will be for some time.
Mac Pro (Then Sold)
Last years goal was to update my setup from a 17″ iMac to a more powerful machine. I achieved that earlier this year when I bought a brand new 2.66Ghz Mac Pro. The machine has now been sold as I’ve moved to a fully portable setup, the MacBook Pro + Apple Cinema Display.

30″ Apple Cinema Display
I remember a few years back when I first saw one of these massive displays, I told myself I wanted one, and would one day have one. I never thought that day would actually arrive, yet earlier this year in tandem with the Mac Pro, it did. I became the owner of my dream display. I’m fully aware the Apple Cinema Display line will be updated in the near future, but I have no plans to sell and update. The 30″ display is a perfect extension to the workspace on my 15″ notebook, and adds superb functionality.
MacBook Pro
When I sold my Mac Pro I needed a new machine, I decided to make the move to a portable computing platform - the MacBook Pro. To all those who’ve asked, the MacBook Pro was kindly sponsored by AdvertiseHereForever. Thanks Brendan!
Canon 50mm f/1.8 (Then Sold)
One item I singled out last year to buy in 2007, was this 50mm prime lens. I only recently made the purchase, then quickly sold (after a few thousand images..) to upgrade to its big brother, the f/1.4 version.
Canon 50mm f/1.4
I loved the lens listed above so much, I wanted to reap the benefits of the f/1.4 version. Faster and more accurate auto-focus, better build quality, and a wider aperture opening. This lens is a dream to own, it’s permanently attached to my Canon EOS 350D.
iPod touch 16GB
After selling all of my iPods, I picked up the 16Gb iPod touch the day of release. The iPod touch is the most exciting device I’ve ever owned. The touch based functionality leaves on-lookers stunned.
Other items purchased included the new Apple Wireless Keyboard, the Canon PowerShot TX1, and the Altec Lansing FX6021 Speakers.
Planned purchases for 2008? Possibly updating the MacBook Pro to a newer model later in the year (quad-core), an iPhone, and a various array of Canon lenses.
I’ve been very lucky to have owned these items this year, next year will be much quieter in the money spending department as I continue to save toward my future.
What technology items did you purchase in 2007, and what do you plan to purchase next year?

December 20th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
It’s funny, I used to do this a few years ago but my attitude has changed.
I now only buy a new ‘gadget’ if it is replacing another, is needed, and offers something new. I’m also becoming more aware of the impact of the environment of such things.
As such I’m not planning on buying any gadgets next year. Although if the PS3 drops low enough I will replace my current DVD player with one of those.
December 20th, 2007 at 9:45 pm
I completely agree. I also find it’s a huge money sucker, I’m really going to be thinking hard over future purchases.
December 20th, 2007 at 9:57 pm
I was under the impression that the 30″ needed two DVI ports to function; how does it work with a MacBook?
Because dammit, if I don’t also want one!
December 20th, 2007 at 10:00 pm
Michael. It uses a dual link port, same as normal DVI connector in design, but different technology. It’s doesn’t need dual ports, it just needs one :-)
December 20th, 2007 at 10:09 pm
Looks like I need to get myself a 30″ cinema display :)
December 20th, 2007 at 10:26 pm
Good post Glenn.
For me it has been a very expensive year: I bought a MacBook Pro (2.2GHz), 24″ Dell Display, LaCie 500GB Hard Drive and iPod Touch. Most of these were bought in light of me getting the MacBook Pro as my first Mac.
For 2008?
One of my big purchases will in fact be a PC, or at least the components of one; I’ve been wanting to build one for a while now.
December 20th, 2007 at 11:32 pm
Hey Glenn
Just a quick comment on your images. They are very nicely composed but lately I must admit the saturation and contrast levels seem to be way too high. They are beginning to have too much of an artificial look. I’m a big fan of Velvia but thats taking it to the extreme. Just my opinion.
Really like your site. I work for a company down in Christchurch called Photo & Video
so if you need any gear either drop me an email at http://www.teaboy@photo.co.nz (attn Nick) we have a website photo.co.nz. which lists all of our pricing.
Anyway have a good Christmas.
Later

This year has seen:
a) Nokia N95
b) iPod Classic 80GB silver
c) Black MacBook 2.16Ghz, 160GB HD, 4GB RAM
Next year will probably see a 3G iPhone if it comes out, or a larger capacity iPod Touch
December 21st, 2007 at 3:09 am
Glenn, I had a similar plan to you as I came into 2007. I had a plan to switch to a Mac. And I did.
-MacBook Pro
-Bose Companion 2 Speakers
-Rain Design mStand
-Apple Keyboard
-WD Passport (Soon to be replaced with a larger FireWire drive).
That’s just what I can see siting here at my desk. I think there’s more.
Your list is a bit better but I consider this a good year for me as well! Well done!
December 21st, 2007 at 3:10 am
Glenn,
What is the biggest advantage of having the 50mm f/1.4 over the f/1.8? I’m really considering a good lower light lens, other than the standard stock lens that came with my Rebel XTi. Can I really justify spending another $200+ on the f/1.4?

Not a big year for me in terms of new gadgets, mostly because I had just purchased a new MacBook Pro at the end of last year. But I did get:
- iPhone (now unlocked, of course)
- Canon Digital Rebel XT
For next year? I’m hoping to pick up a few new lenses for my camera (not sure yet if I’ll get the 50mm f/1.4 or the 1.8).
December 21st, 2007 at 6:19 am
This year I have bought an iPhone and not much else other than tonnes of guitar kit such as:
Pedal board, numerous boss pedals, wireless system, Hughes and Kettner trilogy and a new ESP viper.

December 21st, 2007 at 7:49 am
Good Question Glen,
This year I purchased a mac mini, that despite it’s size is a pretty snappy system. I purchased a Lacie 500gb external hard drive,Apple Airport Extreme, Apple Wireless keyboard, Mighty Mouse, IPhone, Apple TV, Roxio Crunch, IWork, Quicken for Mac, Jawbone Headset.
2008 will hold a few new surprises for me as well. I plan on purchasing a 50 inch Phillips Plasma screen to fit nicely in the living room to show case my nice collection of movies in the living room, also in the works is a playstation 3…..I know I am behind the power curve on that one, but hey I was waiting for a few bugs to be worked out on the system.
Great question again glen. Happy Holidays!

I think the only thing was a 3rd-gen iPod nano (8GB)… oh, and Creative EP-630 in-ear headphones ($40).
In 2008: hopefully convince the family to buy a low-end SLR (Nikon D40/D40x or Canon XT/XTi) plus a nice cheap 50mm lens for it.
Oh, and a new Mac, perhaps in June or August? This 4-year-old eMac G4 is just starting to show its age, but it’s still working admirably well, so no urgent need for a replacement.

In my opinion, you own too many things. That’s all most people care about in our capitalist society: things, things, things. Hike up to the mountains, build yourself a cabin, and live their for the rest of your life! Things like meditation can be much more rewarding than buying another thing.
December 23rd, 2007 at 5:58 pm
Will, very well put. If you read this post thoroughly, you’ll see that what I want in 2008 is far less material orientated.
December 24th, 2007 at 11:21 pm
Haha…wow…this year has been expensive, yet awesome.
*Mac Pro Quad Core 3.0GHz 4GB RAM, nVidia Quattro FX4500 Dual superdrives 2 750GB HDs

Final Cost for Everything you see: A bit over $25,000USD ….ouch :P lol

Not to mention, I still want a BMW M6….those babies cost about $98 Grand in the US :P
December 28th, 2007 at 1:06 pm
“not buying gadgets because they impact the environment” is a load of nonsense. Sorry to say it like that but it’s true. The environment is no worse off because of the advances in technology. Do yourself a favour and watch The Great Global Warming Swindle.
I don’t believe I wasted any money this year, as I bought things I needed and replaced things that had their day. I don’t believe in buying for the sake of having, because then you don’t appreciate what you have.
* Panasonic SC-PT850EB-K Home Theatre System
* Slingbox
* HP Pavilion Entertainment Laptop
* Nokia N95
* Bluetooth Sony Headphones
* XBOX 360
2008:
* iMac or a Mac Pro (can’t decide yet).
* baby (at which point I can give up all gadgets for at least 18 years).
:-)
January 1st, 2008 at 5:59 pm
I got a Wii, a Macbook which will be sold soon, probably before Macworld, and a G4 Cube. Other than that, I haven’t bought much. In ‘08, I plan on getting a 360, a PS3 if the price drops, a PC, and a Powerbook G4 of some sort (haven’t decided which model yet).
January 2nd, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Good post Glenn.
In 2007, I bought:

January 3rd, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Not much this year, but the one thing I did buy was pretty big:
iPhone.
Need I say more? I think not.
For 2008, I plan to purchase a MacBook. It will most likely be one of those new “ultra-portable” ones, if they ever do come out.
January 6th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Hi! Your blog’s been on my Google Reader subscription list for awhile now, so I figured that I might as well leave a comment or two. :) My list of tech buys for 2007 is pretty dry, as I ended up spending quite a bit of cash on concert tickets and CDs:
16GB iPod touch
Sharper Image Bluetooth headphones
LG enV
Casio EX-S880 camera
Kensington Si750m Wireless Notebook Laser Mouse
A few SanDisk 4GB Cruzer Micro flash drives (on sale)
Koss QuietZone Noise Canceling Stereophones
For 2008, I’m hoping to pick up a MacBook. I’ve been wanting one for years now, but I can finally justify buying one if I end up going to a residential high school/college this year.
February 8th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
This is a terrific site Glenn! I found it off of QuackTrack to see who else is into Apple, and I will returning!
On the topic of the post, when my iBook died, I bought a MacBook. Great machine.
