The anatomy of an XHTML document

Anatomy of a Document by Molly E. Holzschlag is a close look at the different parts of an XHTML document, all the way from the XML declaration to the closing html tag.

The document is the start of a series of posts in which Molly is going to deconstruct documents and discuss terminology and best practices. The goal is to put together a human-readable glossary or lookup chart for commonly used terms within XHTML and CSS, as Molly puts it in XHTML Anatomy: A Document Deconstructed.

It’s a great idea, and she wants your help. The text accompanying the deconstructed document contains a number of cited terms which you are welcome to provide clear and easily understood definitions for.
