Three or four little things.
September 5th, 2006
The film festival’s approaching, and I’m planning on seeing 26 (!) movies…and standing in 26 lines. Not only is the second Trekking sock well underway, but I’ve also started a MDK baby kimono for my longtime friend Steve, his lovely wife Jen and their brand new one-day-old baby Griffin. (YAY GRIFFIN!) I’ll try to get a few updates in here over the next few weeks–but here are some short snappers in the meantime:
- My pal Tara, who has also written for Knitty, has a story at CBC.ca about the film festival–and she’s quoted me extensively (I guess no one else would return her calls!)…you can find her highly amusing–and highly incriminating–article here.
- Quite a few of you mentioned how much you loved the Bright Eyes video I posted earlier. It’s by one of my favourite filmmakers, John Cameron Mitchell. He’ll be in town with his new movie Shortbus which is both explicitly sexual (and I do mean completely totally explicitly sexual) and endearingly sweet. I’m taking Asif to see it as well as one of my CBC co-workers, as one of the stars–Sook-Yin Lee–is also a CBCer. To see some trailers for the film (a cleaned up version and an uncensored version), go visit Shortbus - the Movie. Someone’s handed me the North American release schedule–I pass it on to you:
Sept 10 - North American premiere at Toronto Film Festival
Oct 4 - New York release at the Landmark Sunshine
Oct 6 - LA and SF release
Oct 13 through Nov - expands across North America
Keep in mind that the movie will either be rated NC17 or will be released unrated…so you’ll have to go looking for it.
- Speaking of movies–I’m in one! A whole passel of male knitters are in Wendy Eidson’s documentary Real Men Knit, including yours truly. She’ll be in town this week to catch some films at the festival, and she’ll be bringing along some DVDs. If you’re curious to check it out, head to her production company’s website, Unconfined Mind.
- The new Knitty is almost out…but I’m a big loser and completely forgot to submit a column for this issue. (Sigh.) It’s cool though, Amy’s being very understanding and I obviously needed the rest–or to get a bunch of stuff done. I’ll be back next issue for sure!
- I think that’s it for the moment. If I think of anything else I’ll come back and add it in. Oh, by the way, my first film at the festival is Thursday’s midnight screening of Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. If you don’t know who Borat is…you may want to pay the beautiful Borat home page a visit. If you don’t go blind immediately, the movie trailer is a must-see!
Jagshemash! And see you at the movies!

I’ll do my best–the four-movie days are the killers!
