Happy Blog Day!

August 31st, 2006

Happy Blog Day to bloggers everywhere! (Actually, it’s so happy that I think we’ve crashed the Blog Day server.)

I only just heard of Blog Day today when fellow blogger Ivonne mentioned it to me in one of my morning e-mails. The idea is to introduce the world to five new bloggers, all of whom should be new (or at least relatively new) to you. And to help make things interesting, the blogs in question should focus on a subject different from the one you focus on. So, for example, you won’t find any out-and-out knitting blogs on my list.

A few of you may know that I work for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Canada’s national public broadcaster. While I have done some work in front of the microphone (never in front of the camera, neither I nor the nation would be able to stand it!), I have done most of my work either behind the scenes or waaaaaaaay behind the scenes. There are several interesting blogs by CBC staffers–the well-known ones include Teamakers by the mysterious Ouimet, and Tod Maffin’s Inside the CBC. Here are a few others that I’ve learned of recently that are worth checking out:

John Gushue - John Gushue is a news writer for CBC.ca in St. John’s and also writes an internet column for The Telegram. His latest post is about a game on the website for the TV show Entourage (lamentably, not a CBC program) where you can learn to talk like uberagent Ari Gold.

Matt Watts - Matt Watts is a writer and actor, remembered and loved for his two-year stint on Ken Finkleman’s The Newsroom. His most recent post is about the Lost-inspired opening sketch from this year’s Emmy Awards.

Joe Mahoney - Joe Mahoney is a writer/broadcaster in CBC Radio’s Arts & Entertainment department. He has produced, directed and written a lengthy list of radio dramas, has written, produced and voiced a number of radio features, and in his spare time is very fond of science fiction. His most recent post is an interview with famed science fiction writer Larry Niven.

Tania Howells - Alright, this one is kind of cheating, as Tania Howells is a knitter and all-round craftster and is doing the illustrations for Amy Singer’s ‘No Sheep’ book. (She also has some nifty designs at Knitty’s cafepress store.) However, she’s also a denizen of the Mother Corp so she’s earned her spot on this list for that. Her most recent post is about her encounter with an opossum (gorgeous little drawing included).

And for my fifth blog, I’d like to turn your attention to Ivonne’s Cream Puffs in Venice. Filled with amazing recipes and fabulous pictures, it makes my mouth water just to look at it! You may remember that I bought Asif a lovely KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer for his birthday. This site should give it the kind of workout it’s been looking for.

Enjoy!

    David,

And a happy Blog Day to you! I look forward to spending some time over this long weekend looking at the blogs you’ve referenced, especially Matt Watts’ blog!

And don’t be surprised if I start harrassing you with e-mails requesting knitting advice as I am a novice knitte (very very very novice)!

    All my best!

My inbox is waiting, Ivonne–and thanks for making me part of your celebration!

I have an ideal project for drunken knitting occasions:

That’s a great idea, Jane–though my fear is that any drunken attempts to “knit a square” would, on my part, end up being “knit a trapezoid” or - worse - “knit a random, vaguely geometric form”! Great if it still manages to keep someone warm though :)

Thanks for the namecheck! Stop by whenever you like … I don’t write about the CBC all that much, but I post on all kinds of things on a daily basis. Cheers,
    John Gushue

    Thanks for the mention, David!
