Kiki & Herb

This is what Asif and I will be seeing in New York next Wednesday, as long as I remember not to pack any liquids or gels.

(For maximum entertainment value, be sure to watch the audio slideshow linked in the left-hand column after reading the glowing review.)

Don’t forget chapstick! That one’s not allowed either, and I know I would be heartbroken if I had to toss a perfectly good tube of Burt’s Bees away…

and mascara, and shoe inserts, and knitting needles…. but if you need a wrench (7 inches or smaller) by all means…

I have been (knocks wood) VERY LUCKY when it comes to knitting needles. Mind you, I always carry circular needles instead of straight ones, never metal, never double pointed, and I’ve never brought any on smaller than a size 5.

Wait……WAIT…..they’re banning our needles now, like, for real? Are you kidding me? It has always, always said very expressly on the NTSB website that knitting needles were allowable carryon items (believe me, when I was interviewing for residencies the first time around in ‘03, I carried a printout from the website with me!). Take my chapstick, take my bottled water, take my damn iPod if you must, but I’m back on the interview trail this year, and if they try to tell me I can’t knit on the plane, I’ll give them a right proper demonstration of just how dangerous those suckers can be! (huffs) The nerve….hmpf….

I think the problem now is that they arn’t allowing caryon. We picked up my grandpa from the airport on Tuesday, and they had had to check their carryon through. Maybe it’s let up now, but for awhile they were letting nothing on the plane unless it was neccessary.

Well, okay, but, who gets to define “necessary?!!” Like, I think my needles and yarn are necessary. I’d be willing to forgo my shoes, and/or, potentially, my shirt, though. Particularly if they’d let me knit a blanket in-flight.

Just so that everyone’s aware…as a result of the recent situation in UK, the list of prohibited items (which is different for each country you’re travelling from) has changed about a half-dozen times in the last two weeks.

Knitting needles are currently permitted if you’re travelling from the US or from Canada. UK air travel is still under heightened restriction and the rules regarding knitting needles are unclear.

If you’re leaving from an American airport, the list to consult is here: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#4

If you’re leaving from a British airport–well, my heart goes out to you. Your information is here (and click your departure airport for even more information): http://www.baa.co.uk/

If you’re leaving from a Canadian airport, your information is here: http://www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca/english/travel_voyage/list.htm

Kiki and Herb, evoking Marianne Faithfull, Elaine Stritch, Patti Smith and Kitty Carlisle Hart? My old heart couldn’t stand the fabulousness of such show. You guys live the life that the rest of us can only dream of living. BTW they look amazing for their their 60+ years.

Oh Ian…let me just say that when they evoke those esteemed women–those are just the show’s crappy parts! At their most blindingly brilliant, your heart would bust out of your chest and explode right in front of you! Do I overpraise? I think not.

Also, Kiki’s songlist will be drawn from the oeuvres of such esteemed artists as Bright Eyes, Public Enemy, Bonnie Tyler, Dan Fogelberg, The Cure, Scissor Sisters…plus a ‘torn-from-the-headlines’ rendition of One Tin Soldier.
