Lazy Bum II
July 24th, 2006
It’s been more than a week since I last posted–what is it about the summer where the days just melt into each other (sometimes literally) and you lose track of the all-important things…like posting on your blog?
Three things of note: Ruth-Ellen is nearly finished the armholes on her ecru Slouch–and keeps bringing me little mistakes to fix of the most inventive kind. She comes to me saying things like “I don’t know how I did this,” and then hands me her work and I look at it…and I have to concur: I don’t know how she did it either. This keeps my lunch hours lively and free of self-destructive behaviour like online shopping. I can’t wait till we reach her shoulders and begin the shaping–that will be like climbing an alp for her, and I will no doubt be conscripted as her sherpa.
Last Thursday I went to a sneak preview screening of the fabulous all-female (not dumb blonde female, but interesting mature female) British-but-made-in-US horror movie The Descent, and I took the sock. There is something indescribably hardcore about knitting your sock in an hourlong block-long line-up of gore-happy horror fans. I have been waiting for this movie for what seems like ages, and it did not disappoint. If you like good old-fashioned nasty scary movies (and this one is like Deliverance-meets-Alien underground, with some clever greatest-hits moments from about a dozen other genre classics woven in for good measure), go go go GO! It starts August 4 at fine cinemas everywhere.
Finally, yesterday was Asif’s birthday and I got him one of these in white. I told him he could take it back and exchange it for the colour of his choice (red seems to be very popular, as is black, and of course there is pink, along with 16 other colours), but all his other applicances are white so we’ll see what he does. All in all he had about 70-to-80 guests and I think only one broken glass, just the right amount of food, just the right amount of dessert - including these - and we didn’t run out of booze. I am not hung over. I can’t speak for anyone else.

Hi there! I’m a new reader (and subscriber too! through Bloglines). Just wanted to say how much I enjoy these entries. The KitchenAid Mixer is such a staple and a happy part of my household- I sometimes wonder what would happen to me if I was left alone with the Kitchen Aid Mixer and a Barefoot Contessa cookbook. Danger!

Oooooh, pretty! The white is so classic. Maybe now you need to knit a little cover for it when it’s not in use? A mixer-cozy, if you will……. Nah…… Also, impressive chocolate blossom thingie!
And PS, I’m glad to hear there’s someone else out there who whips out their knitting projects in obscure places like movie lines. People down here tend to think it’s weird, but then are fascinated by whatever it is that I’m making. I’ve met more nice people over baby blankets in the hospital waiting room and shawls on the train, etc, than I can believe!

What a lovely birthday gif! And yummy desserts. Seems like a paradox to be knitting a sock in line at a scary movie, but such is the way of we knitters, isn’t it? We are multi-faceted.

Mmmmm, chocolate-covered strawberries… I love that you knit your sock while waiting in line for such a scary movie. Was there any reaction from the other people in line?

Torontonians are a farily jaded bunch–so I’m delighted to say ‘no particular reaction’. (It might have been different if I’d been at a WWE event, or a monster truck rally!) I’ve gotten more relaxed about knitting in public over the years. Those who are intrigued by it are usually quite complimentary and encouraging–and those who are inclined to back away B-A-C-K-A-W-A-Y!

I completely agree with the whole knitting in lines thing…at the BMV the other day…I nearly made a whole scarf…but then the lady next to me tried to buy it off me for $5…when I have $50 in yarn in it. Non-knitters are so cheap.
