Loving Day.

June 11th, 2006

In a non-knitting aside, I thought I’d mention that June 12 is Loving Day for our American friends. Loving Day is the anniversary of Loving v. Virginia, which in 1967 reversed all the U.S. state laws outlawing interracial couples.

As someone in an interracial relationship, this celebration is especially meaningful for me, and is a chance for all of us–no matter where we live–to observe how far we’ve come in the global struggle for human rights and the recognition of equality among loving adult relationships…and how far some of us still have to go.

I didn’t know about June 12th, but I sure will add it to my calendar from now on.
As a child of an interracial marriage, currently dating a man of a different race, this is definitely a great celebration ^_^.
    Thanks for posting it!!

I’m glad that this has met with such positive response, both on here and in my inbox! It sounds like this should be a national–and international–holiday :)

Thank you for posting about this! I am also in an interracial relationship, and I will certainly remember to celebrate properly next year.

Thank you, Jen, though sometimes when I’m knitting three together through the back loop and the yarn gets all splitty, it’s kind of hard to tell.

I’m grateful for the sentiment though, and I’m sure he loves you too. (But maybe not in all-caps.)
