Man I love political double speak!
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid has declared that the “Contract with America” made by Republicans in 1994 when they took control of both houses of Congress, has accomplished nothing.
So what do the Democrats have in mind for America when they “regain control of Congress” in 2006? Get ready for it… “A New Direction for America” or “Six for 2006″.
The six point plan is supposed to “seal the deal” for the left in this country. They are…
- National security
- Jobs and wages
- Energy independence
- Affordable health care
- Retirement security
- College access for all
Lets look at these, one by one…
National Security
Ok, so I’m supposed to believe that people who can’t even call a terrorist a terrorist are somehow more equipped to “secure” this country than the Republicans are? I’m not saying the Republicans are well equipped either, but if John Kerry’s “plan” was evidence of their “plan” I can’t say I put my trust in them on this one.
Jobs and Wages
Otherwise known as “raise the minimum wage through the roof” and require a “living wage” for full time employees that is so steep that France gets a chuckle out of our unemployment numbers. We all know that you can’t find a better paying job, so why not let the government make the current job you have better.
Energy Independence
Now, if this were really what they claim it to be, I’d be all for it but judging from the political pandering from years past and some of the crackpot ideas that slid across the table in Congress I doubt it is. An outright ban on all SUV’s (they suck gas ya know). Governmental regulation of the Auto industry, demanding all US Automakers make hybrid vehicles and “buy back” their old models in a national trade in program. Pile that on top of a “windfall profit tax” on all oil companies to help find an alternative source for oil.
Hey, I’m all for finding a renewable energy source, but taxes, taxes and taxes won’t do crap.
Affordable Healthcare
Ahhh, socialized medicine, the red headed stepchild of the DNC. The myth that universal coverage and good health go hand in hand. Here’s one example for you, Infant Mortality. The National Center for Health Statistics states that the two races with the lowest infant mortality rate in the US are Hispanics and Whites. They also state that Hispanics also have the lowest numbers insured in America. So how can someone without health coverage be at the top of the charts for lowest infant mortality? Statistics like these depend on other factors like diet, marital status, drug use, and cultural values… not “health insurance”.
Retirement Security
Ahhhh, Social Security. The epitome of anti-personal responsibility legislation. The DNC will have you believe that the answer to solving the current Social Security crisis is to just pump more money into it. After all, we know that more taxes solves everything. God forbid we allow Americans to control their own retirement funds.
College Access for All
Now THIS I DON’T understand… we already have ‘access’ to college for all. It’s called Scholarships, Grants, etc. If you want to go to college, you will go to college, the government does not need to PROVIDE you with an education. Look in any newspaper come Fall and you’re bound to find a story of the child of a mom living in the projects who above all adversity will be heading off to college. It all comes down to personal responsibility… if you have the drive to go to college, there will be a college waiting for you. Simply providing college for everyone will overload our college campuses and severely damage the value of the education provided at these schools.
So the Republican’s “Contract with America” failed us, but we’re supposed to turn right back around and buy into the “New Direction for America”… right.
