06.28Freedom of speech safe, for now.
The Congress of the United States attempted yesterday, to squash an aspect of one of your BASIC freedoms, speech.
Fortunately for this country, enough of them stood against the Constitutional Amendment banning the burning of the American Flag to kill it. The attempt to kill freedom was squashed by ONE vote.
Can someone explain how burning a flag should be illegal? If I stand up on a stage and scream to the heavens that I disagree with the government, I have an army of people who would stand behind me and support my right to say what I have to say. Yet, let’s say that rather than using words to shout my disagreement, I decide to burn a flag… I’m now supposed to go to jail for my dissent. It’s the SAME action folks, there is NOTHING different here, one just happens to use a flame.
Why do your senators keep pushing for these things? Because they see polls that say that we the public have lost touch with our appreciation of freedom, therefore the idea of banning free speech is a popular one. Think of it more along the lines of a ‘partial repeal of the 1st Amendment’, it should sit better with your conscience.
