Touch typing is basically having the entire keyboard memorized, and typing on feel rather than looking down (even if it's for a split second).
I'm a touch-typer with a speed of around 96wpm. Anyone else touch typers?

With the amount I type daily I have no choice but to be a touch typer. I see people who go about things one button at a time and it blows my mind how they get anything done, but to each their own I suppose. I did have to force myself how to type properly, but after that it was all sunflowers and butterflies.

Touch typer.
None of my friends can believe how quickly I type but I can't believe how long it takes them to type!

YHup I din't have to lppk!
Yeah, I've always been a "touch-typer". Last speed test I took, I averaged about 140-ish or more, but I rarely type that quickly doing every day tasks. I'll son you if you ever need to me retype the Gettysburg address, though.

I used to be up in the 90's speed wise with a technique that is touchtyping (Just not the official finger placements).
Since my wrists started playing up my speed has taken a bit of a dive, but last test I took I was still up there in the mid 80's wpm range.
Quite a lot of my colleagues are proponents of the 'hunt and peck' school of typing. I really have no idea how they manage!

A buddy of mine is quite adept at the one handed typing thing. I'm not going to delve to far into that, for fear my mind might be horribly disturbed.

Oh yeah, I believe I started touch typing very very early on (I remember occasionally being too fast for the computers at school in typing class) and I've been on the computer since I was very young.
Yeah, quite the geek test...

I touch type but it's also not a traditional offical typing proces I use. I did my typing qualifications but it's a variant that works for me I use now. Again though, with the amount I type all day I have no choice but to go the touch type route with so much going on screenwise.

I go between both. It depends on how out of it I am. But then again, I'm a 2 finger touch typer because of my wrists. You don't see many of that around.

I can't touch type but think it would save me a whole load of time, do you guys have any tips for learning?
Also do you guys touch type code? Seems that would be tricky with all the funny symbols everywhere.

I'm a TT too. The last time I took a "speed test" I was about 120wpm. Its been a long time though. I'm pretty sure my spelling & mistakes are horrible now due to all of my chat & irc lingo habbits,
Funny thing is, I failed typing in high school! Now I could have passed easily LOL. I learned how to type by using a BBS back in the day..

Around 100 wpm....but I correct as I go so I do alot of backspacing, which might make my speed a bit slower.

Yeah - you'll eventually learn where all the most-used symbols are, too.
Mario Teaches Typing was what they had us use in elementary school - I wonder if you can still get that program, haha. There's sure to be some typing programs out there. Anything that gives you some words/sentences to type and increases in speed/difficulty as you finish each "level" should be a good start.

I've been touch typing since I was about 14. I don't know what my speed is since I've never tested it, but I'd estimate it's around fucking lightning wpm.
Trivia: I have a keyboard that has no letters or anything on it. Just plain black keys. I used that for about 2 years.

I wouldn't say I am a touch typer but I do have quite a speed going when I'm in full flow. My problem is ilike to look at the keyboard as I type, flicking upto the monitor every noew and then. I actually find it easir on my Laptop than I do on my normal iMac keyboard. My Dad gets frustrated with how quick I can type now, I leave him for dead and he was always pretty darn quick!
Never done a test to see how fast I can do it, but it would be quite interesting, anyone know of a link?

Touch typer. 140 words per minute, and I do dictation when necessary. I am the MAN! :)

I'm a touch typist, and I type around 90 words per minute without error. I could do faster, but then I'd have to backspace, which is aggravating. I can't stand looking at the keyboard, especially if I'm multitasking on the computer.

Yeah, I touch type. Last time I tested it was in the 70s - 80s, but that was a while back.

Anyone have recommendations for typing exercise software for the Mac? My speed has been down in the 60s and 70s lately and my technique is sloppy.

I don't understand how anyone who uses the internet regularly can NOT be a touch typer.
I have touch typed since I was twelve or so I think. I do it wrong, though, I rarely use my right little finger though I should. I type at about 100wpm if I'm doing stream of conciousness or copying something from paper.

I'm a touch typer. Actually, just yesterday I was playing a type test game with a friend. I got 97wpm.. and he got 107wpm. (Drats!) Here's a link to the typing test if anyone is interested. First couple times I was around 85wpm with an average of 5 errors a time (ouch!). Fun little test. Parallel (our company) actually started working on a web-based typing game a while back.. maybe we'll finish it up one of these days and post it here.

I learned how to burst type certain words like CATALOG and BRUN, and worked up from there. I never learned the correct finger placement on the home keys, which is probably what's saved my wrists from carpal tunnel since my arms are angled just as they would if I were using a bent ergo keyboard. I probably do something like 70-80wpm without error. Wht's impotant is that i type as fast as I can generally think, which makes writing so much easier.

"without error. Wht's"
I won't say a thing.
I've never been able to type correctly, with the home row placement, certain fingers for certain keys, etc etc. I started off doing the search-and-poke method and have heavily evolved from there; I type at a decent speed, but not entirely fast. I don't look at the keyboard at all (Aside from things like keyboard shortcuts, etc), now that you mention it, but I do make many errors.

I use hunt and peck without the eyes. I have no official hand position but I still can type very fast without looking. It is very strange... I do most of the work with just my index fingers but I still get around 80 wpm. So, I guess I'm partially touch typing since I know where everything is but I also peck since I don't use any finger formation.

I'm a touch typer. I don't do it the textbook way though. I was never able to untrain myself from my mile-a-minute finger method but I can still blow through 65-70 wpm.
Though a couple years ago when I worked at a teen help site, I typed closer to 95 wpm as I was answering 50 emails per week and spending hours in the chatroom there.
But seriously, I now work in technical support and it pains me to see how other tech people hunt and peck their way through a screen over and over again. It's painful to watch.
Touch typing was actually my biggest fear with the MacBook's new keyboard layout. But my big fingers are right at home on its flatter, larger keys.

Unfortunately what I learned in typing class was one of the few things I retained from high school, so I touch-type. I am developing carpal tunnel syndrome though, so I may eventually have to adapt.
I just tested myself at 103.57 wpm. Not too shabby.

LOL - that sounds like me. I never learned how to touch type, but with enough typing I did in data entry and coding jobs, I just picked it up like second nature. Last I tested was around 130wpm, but that was a few months ago.

I'm at 125 wpm and started touch-typing from the get-go, which was "keyboarding class" twice a week in 3rd grade. The connection just was already there. (Classically trained pianist for 12 years.)
