» Nikon D40X lens question  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by BPerron.

Hey Ben, you're in luck! I just bought the Nikon D40X. It's true, both the D40 and D40X should use AF-S/AF-I type lenses.

Reason being the D40 series does not have the auto-focus motor built into the body. The motor is built into AF-S/AF-I type lenses. With that being said, you can use ANY Nikon and Sigma lens with the AF mount. However, ones labeled without the S or I prefix means you have to focus manually. Sigma lenses can be used with Nikons. Their version of S/I is called HSM.

Since both cameras are in the sub $1000 range, you're only REAL competitors are the Canon EOS Rebel XTI and the Pentax K100D. I've tried both. The Canon Rebels take awesome photos. Lenses are good too. My only complaint is the cheapy construction. If you've ever held a Canon, and then held a Nikon, then you know what I mean. The plastic used in Canon Rebels are really cheap.

When it comes down to features, the Pentax K100D wins hands down. Pentax lenses are some of the BEST in the industry. If you worried about lens compatibility, the K100D works with EVERY PENTAX LENS EVER and they have A LOT. The K100D also has optical image stabilization built-in. Both the Nikon and Canon have it ONLY if you purchase a lens with it built-in. Otherwise their kit lenses don't.

I settled on the Nikon because of their lenses. I plan on buying the 55-200mm VR lens soon. If you don't know what lenses you want yet, go for the Canon or Pentax.

I've entered 3 designs into the Nokia N76 design contest. The design with the highest ratings will actually be made by Nokia!

Here's a link to get more info and to vote. Please if you like my design, give me 5-star ratings. :)

I'm talking about exclusive in attitude. Some people feel they and their blogs are better, and that is justification to belittle other members. That's what I meant by exclusive.

I think there's a "program" at M.I.T. designed to teach the the nerdy and socially inept skills to lure female companions. Hilarious really.

Oh and I CALL DIBS ON RICH'S POINTS!

kidding, only kidding. :)

» Hanging Up My Hat  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by fray.

It all does sound odd but in Rich's defense I can somewhat see where he's coming from. There is this sense of exclusivity on 9rules now although that isn't a problem, I can see it becoming one later down the road. People who want to make the best out of their 9rules' experience feel alienated and it slowly becomes just another popularity club.

Anyways, good luck with everything Rich.

I narrowed it to just 3; digg, delicious and stumbled upon.

Blog design is still in its infancy and just like the web circa 1996, people need to learn how to edit design and functionality. Just like by 1998, people realized having 10 animated gifs on your site was no longer necessary.

» What's Your Untouchable Topic?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Impz.

I don't write about sexual orientation. I myself am a gay man but choose to avoid it because it seems to bring conflict to both sides of the argument. In the end the engagement doesn't seem to have helped anyone in their views.

On that note, I am beginning to to get peeved at the number of blogs who use the term "gay" a a derogatory adjective. An example is saying, "that looks so gay".

What's your feeling about making fun of people on blogs?

Blogging Community — Posted: Apr. 8, 2007  ...   Last By: Devin @ 1 year ago

I'm a part of this new blog and we're all still trying to find that one collection voice in our posts. We have a fast growing audience but some of us want to write these humorous posts that sorta spoof different stereotypes.

An example would be finding pictures of overweight people doing things you stereotypically associate with being overweight and plugging in some funny caption.

My question is where do you draw the line? If we're trying to building a serious rep. without being uptight, will the "Jerry Springer" tactic hurt the blog in the long run?

Symbian from Nokia or Sony for sure.

» Which one? PocketPC or BlackBerry  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by seanrox.

Nay to both. PocketPC is mobile winblowz and Blackberry is nice but I can't get over the "list" type interface once you dig beyond the main screen.

I prefer Symbian phone from Nokia.

First screens! I'm frothing at the mouth right now. Anybody read Japanese?

I hope it's multiplayer online. I need to know more about the combat system. The Nintendo DS really is looking to take more of my game time from the big consoles.

Don't you just hate that? It's like passing a bad check at the grocery store. You can never come back. Promising your Dentist to do as they say and then not do it makes it hard to come back. They ALWAYS know you're lying. LOL

I've had a filling that i got as a young tween come out recently. The hole left behind was HUGE. I had no idea they drilled that much out.

Anywho, it HURT LIKE F*CK! I found avoiding anything hot and cold kept the pain away. Taking a couple Tylenol also helped a lot. I had to wait 3 days before I could get a dentist appt.

Good luck man.

I spent a good hour and half at the store tonight messing with different cams. Here's what I've come away with so far;

Casio Exilim EZ-770
Crazy thin. Screen is bright. Pictures look fastanstic. They look very saturated. Photos in poorly lit areas are just okay. Got some red-eye issues. A bit noisy. Image stablization works well for both pictures and video. Video is awesome too. Can record in widescreen. This thing is slick!

Panasonic Lumix FX50
Thickest of the group but still small. HUGE bright 3" screen. Pictures look fantastic. Pictures in poorly lit areas look very good, very little noise. Image stablization works wonders. Wide angle lens is AWESOME. I can see so much more width-wise. This is a huge plus since group pictures will be so much easier to take. Video recording is so good, 30fps at widscreen. Very solid build, like carved from a block of rubber and metal. Expensive tho at $389.00.

Canon SD750
Thicker than the Casio, but slimmer than the Panasonic. It's made of metal and plastic but still very sturdy. Huge bright 3" screen. All the controls are laid out really well. Pictures were outstanding. Pictures in poorly lit areas were awesome; as good as the Panasonic. The face detection thing is so cool. It knows when there's a face and the flash and lens are adaptive making the person look bright and saturated without over exposing the background. Has cool video recording but highest resolution is VGA at 30fps. It can take widescreen photos but it's not a wide angle lense and can't record widescreen video.

So right now, it's between the Canon and Panasonic. I was worried they were too big but in person, they're still very compact. I wish the super compact cameras could muster better night shots. Oh well.

I saw Sony had a sh*tload of new cameras there too. Anybody have a specific model I should try or any other brands?

» How do you design?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Wolf.

I usually start by designing components, like a search bar, or a new way to show tags, or a cool way to show a picture gallery, maybe an awesome nav idea etc... I look at them as experiments not bound by whatever rules I know the final design must have.

I start small with these individual components. Doing it this way lets me really make each component or element special. So in a way, I'm building up this library of cool stuff. Then I consult with other people about my general idea and show them these components. Their feedback helps me tie everything together. A theme begins to form.

This is when I start blocking out my markup. As my theme, color story and the general look and feel begin to take shape, I begin work on the CSS, flipping back and forth.

I end up not using many of the components but they eventually find their way into other projects. Sometimes I've spent so much time on one, it can stand alone and still be very cool.

Hope that makes sense.

» I need a new Point & Shoot, any recommendations?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by jackosh.

I've eliminated the Nikon Coolpix from contention. Come to find out, it doesn't have REAL image stabilization. Most cameras move the CCD around to stablize the image. The Coolpix only applies a sharpening filter to it.

So it's down to the Casio Exilim, Panasonic Lumix and FujiFulm Z. Anyone else got any other suggestions before I trot down to the store this weekend?

haha I love it. When I was in England, I saw pizza on giant crumpets instead of regular pizza dough. That was interesting.

» Simplicity Is Beautiful  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by cpoteet.

I like simplicity in interaction and generally navigating around. Visually I love color. Designs that use both grab my attention.

I've notice a lot of people define simplicity as monochromatic and devoid of imagery. They use typography to compensate for that. What ends up happening is the page becomes overloaded with text. Then some designs take it a step further and assign 3 or more columns to their layouts. The whole thiing ends up looking like a newspaper. Personally I don't like that.

» How do you eat pizza?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by tranism.

I don't really like pizza. I alway feel bad after I eat it and food shouldn't do that right?

In answer to the question, I'm a plate, knife, fork type person. I cut that bad boy up.

» I need a new Point & Shoot, any recommendations?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by jackosh.

Lila, I can spend up to $400. Lithium Ion batteries are a must, which I thought almost all digital cameras use now. 7 megapixels seems like a good number. My old Cybershot was only 5 megapixels and the images came out fine . . . unless it was dark or my hands shook too much.

» I need a new Point & Shoot, any recommendations?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by jackosh.

Kamigoroshi, Wow that is good for a night photo. My old Cybershot could never do that without tons of noise in the photo. I'll take a look into it. Does it record video?

ErinR, Which Exilim model do you have? Have you taken photos at night or in dim-light places with it?

I need a new Point & Shoot, any recommendations?

Photography Community — Posted: Mar. 22, 2007  ...   Last By: jackosh @ 1 year ago

My Cybershot T1 just died. (Actually I accidentally killed it). I'm in need of a new point and shoot. The one thing I hated about it is no image stablizaton and poor results in dimly lit places. So I definitely need a cam that can still my shaky hands and deal with restauraunt lighting. Video recording would be nice too.

I was thinking the Nikon Coolpix, Casio Exilim or Panasonic Lumix. My friend wants me to get the Lumix because of it's wide angle lens. I do take a lot of group pictures but the Lumix is considerably thicker. What do you guys think?

Any recommendations?

I destroyed almost everything I did in school when I was 10. Not only school work, even school pictures.

Why? I have no idea. It still makes my mom angry when it some how finds its way into idle conversation.

» Applying to 9Rules Network  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by hthth.

I've applied maybe a week or two ago. Don't know if the 9rules God deem my blog worthy tho.

Darkmotion, I like your blog. I don't mind it when blogs meander all over the place in topics. There's a place for diversity too and there's nothing wrong with that. I do agree with an earlier note about having more content on your front page, and maybe imagery to key posts. Imagery usually makes me stop and really dig into a post.

15ark, I couldn't stay on your page too long. It's so text heavy. It needs more negative space to really break out all the content.
