Ok thanks.

So in summary, if 2 computers are on differents paths (workgroup vs domain), there is no way to give specific permissions to xyz computer, hence leaving it to EVERYONE IS THE Only way?

Have a Windows XP workgroup/domain question

Microsoft Community — Posted: Feb. 18, 2008  ...   Last By: peroty @ 7 months ago

Hi all,

So here is my predicament.

I have Windows XP Pro on 2 machines, a desktop and a laptop.

The desktop is my home machine and runs on a workgroup.
My laptop is my work machine that I transport everyday between work and home, and it is on a domain.

I am having problems setting file sharing permissions on specific drives/directories that the computers can both access.

The ONLY time these directories become accessibile is if I choose the default "EVERYONE" permissions options.

Here is my question.

If on my Desktop I have the E: drive and I share it, and go to set permissions, at no point can I choose my laptop (CORPORATE\bryan) as a possible machine addition. It only lists items associated with my WORKGROUP. Again, the laptop uses a DOMAIN.

I would prefer to specifically choose the machines that have access to my shares versus the default EVERYONE.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bryan

See, I have used Maxtor for several years and have not experienced the kind of failures you describe. I have a 250gb internal maxtor, a 120gb external maxtor, and a 300gb external maxtor for the last couple of years and haven't had them fail.

That is just my experience.

Thanks Cooper.

Yea, that is my fear as I am not a huge handy man...so most foreclosed homes are left in disarray so they require quite a bit of work.

» Thoughts on Blogging homepage design  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Majorchamp.

Well, one reason I am asking is because I am in the process of redesigning my golf blog... Major Championships and just trying to determine exactly how I want the content shown on the homepage.

I plan on implementing videos, photos, as well as the last post, all the categories, product reviews, etc...

That is why I asked.

Thanks,

» Anyone with experience in Home Foreclosures?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Majorchamp.

Ah, I see...thanks for clarifying.

The word "foreclosure" always sounds nasty and always feels like you are buying someone from a used car dealer...just never sure what you are going to get.

Someone recently told me if you buy a foreclosed home (one that has officially been in a foreclosed state unlike your friends), to plan on having money on the side to invest in fixing it up as if people can't afford the house payments...they probably won't spend much time keeping the house nice.

A couple foreclosed search sites out there had a home in my area market value of $190,000, Repos value of $98,000...I was like WTF...thinking something must be wrong there...but someone pointing out that the bank just wants to literally get that house off their hands...then again could have been a murder in the home for all I know.

Another one, though, was the opposite. The market value was $190,000, and the REPOS value was $230,000...so that had me scratching my head.

» Anyone with experience in Home Foreclosures?  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Majorchamp.

Thanks Tyme,

Well, if the bank owns the home and the house is empty or has been empty for some time...I guess you wouldn't be taking advantage of someone in distress.

I could never feel comfortable jumping on a "great price" all while someone is still in the home and might be struggling. That is almost evil.

Thoughts on Blogging homepage design

Blogging Community — Posted: Jan. 30, 2008  ...   Last By: Majorchamp @ 8 months ago

I just wanted to pick your brains for a minute.

When it comes to a Blog's homepage, do you typically opt for showing:

1. A bunch of full articles top to bottom (maybe 10 articles) that typically lets you click on the title or a "add comment" to go to the individual posting page

2. Show the latest full posting or a decent sized excerpt of that latest posting, then smaller snippets of the next 5 or 9 postings.

3. Show the latest full or large excerpt, some other stuff on the homepage, and maybe a sidebar that shows the last 10 posts.

Which one do you think is easier for the visitor...

#1, where they read and scroll, read and scroll, read and scroll
#2, where they get a taste of the latest, and then small flavors of the last 9 postings

#3, they only get a taste of the last post, and need to go click around if they want to view other postings.

Maybe your theory doesn't include any of those 3, but I would love to get some feedback and your thoughts on Blog homepage design and what is the best format for your reader.

Thanks,
Bryan

Anyone with experience in Home Foreclosures?

Stuff Community — Posted: Jan. 28, 2008  ...   Last By: Majorchamp @ 8 months ago

Hi all,

With the home marketing being that of a "buyers" market versus a "sellers" market, I have been considering the idea of (at some point in 2008) getting rid of our current ranch style 1600 sq foot home and upgrading to a bigger one as my family grows. I have been considering looking into Foreclosed homes as I can probably get a decent home for a much cheaper price then market value.

So, with that said...does anyone here have any tips (from the standpoint of a buyer) on what are things to look for in a foreclosed home.

Such as:

When looking at websites that show you foreclosed homes in your area, they show you the market price and then the "Repos amount". I have seen homes of MKT value: $190,000 going for REPOS value: $100,000. On the flip side, I have seen homes of MTK value: $190,000 going for REPOS value of $230,000...even though they are in foreclosed state I believe.

I guess, are there any patterns or things I should specifically be aware of when looking into a foreclosed home.

Thank all,
Bryan

Weird Wordpress Import error...need help...I am on Dreamhost

Programming Community — Posted: Jan. 28, 2008

I am getting a strange error during the IMPORT process in Wordpress.

I posted on the Wordpress Forums, but here was my question

I have successfully "exported" my blog entries from one of my WordPress blogs (version 2.2.1) and have tried to "import" those entries into my other Wordpress Blog (version 2.3.2).

I get the following error in my error log files because typically Apache or whatever throws the "500 Internal Server Error page".

Premature end of script headers: php5.cgi, referer: http://www.[removed-my-url].com/wp-admin/admin.php?import=wordpress&step=1

What would be causing this? Is it a problem with my version of WP I am exporting from (maybe the export document has been updated)?

Thanks

That is a good question Mike. Since some of the Guides are more experienced then others, one guide might actually make that phone call to find out, whereas others might rely only on the web.

Bummer you didn't get the answer you wanted, but definitely thanks for giving it a shot. Maybe try a few other questions.

textChaCha at 242 242 - need feedback please

Web Community — Posted: Jan. 17, 2008  ...   Last By: Majorchamp @ 8 months ago

Hey Everyone,

So my company recently launched the mobile piece of ChaCha by allowing anyone anywhere to text any type of question to 242 242. We are actually representing this mobile service at the Sundance Film Festival this week and next. On top of it, we got on MSNBC's website last night: Human guides do the ChaCha over text queries

This service is currently free and only standard text charges apply assuming you are not on an unlimited text plan with your carrier.

I would like you guys to give this a serious shot. Obviously this service doesn't mean jack if you are sitting at a computer, so ask a question you could find yourself asking if you are out and about away from a computer, whether you are at a bar with friends, at a store, in the mall, need weather info, etc...

The point is you can ask 'anything' 'anytime' by texting your question to 242 242. Do it multiple times just to get a feel.

I would like your honest and constructive feedback.

Was it a good experience?
Was your answer of good quality?
Would you consider using this service on a regular basis?
Would you consider paying, through your carrier, a monthly cost for unlimited messages?

------------------------

Here are some actual questions and answers we have been receiving:

Q: Where is a good place to find a good variety of plus size women clothing in dallas texas?

A: Brooks Brothers Woman 214-368-5416 416 Northpark Ctr Dallas TX 75225 http://chacha.com/u/u7zv8u72

Q: My sister went to the Docter and they said she might have cancer will it come back that she does or that she does not

A: Unfortunately I possess no psychic abilities. http://chacha.com/u/bpjxs2hs

Q: Why did kaj take the supervision off Rubashkin meats ?

A: KAJ did this for what appears to be a kosher-related issue, but Rubashkin's press release makes it appear that they fired KAJ. http://chacha.com/u/vqkgvizn

Q: What was brown versus the board of the education about?
A: The decision in 1954 made it illegal to have separate schools for black and white students. Keep on doing the Cha Cha! http://chacha.com/u/0oe89o6e

Q: Is it safe to drive tonight from lakewood new jersey to baltimore md are the highways going to be weather safe

A: There is a 20% chance of precipitation tonight for your travel route, with temperatures in the mid to low 40s. Drive carefully! http://chacha.com/u/b01k60er

Again, I am looking for serious and constructive feedback on the service and whether you would consider using it on a regular basis.

Any other feedback is also appreciated.

Thanks,
Bryan

» Internet explorer CSS problem with a:hover  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Majorchamp.

The example you have is a very stripped down version.

In my local copy, I have other links on the page, and even after I have moved an item from Box #1 to Box #2, and then click on some completely different link on the page, the hover color still maintains on that link that was moved.

That is why I believe the focus has nothing to do with it.

» Internet explorer CSS problem with a:hover  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by Majorchamp.

I don't think it's the focus is still on that link, I think just the link behavior got moved with it. Hovering over the link that was moved then "removes" the hover effect.

I will try your suggestion though.

Internet explorer CSS problem with a:hover

Design Community — Posted: Jan. 14, 2008  ...   Last By: Majorchamp @ 8 months ago

http://btk.name/jquery/move_items/move_items3.html

I can't figure out the solution to my current problem. Basically, I am moving a list item and its link to a new box when clicked, and then vice versa.

When the link is clicked, I "believe" Internet Explorer is taking the last known instance of the link (it's hover state) and then moving it to its new location (box #2). I want it to treat the link like other browsers do.

Can I get around this?

Ajax Rotating Story effect, need examples please

Hey everyone,

This is driving me crazy. I have seen the effect on multiple homepages, but the effect I am after is when there is a slideshow of sorts on a homepage and there is an indicator that toggles through each 'story" on a timed basis, so maybe showing each one every 3-5 seconds.

http://www.golf.com/ does this, but its not the look I have seen. The ideal look is where there is a large image with some form of a giant arrow to the right of image and you can tell there are extra sections it will be looping through on a timed basis. Think of it like this image

I know Visio is one that can do stuff similar, but are there any alternatives?

Where can I find archived versions of Safari for Windows?

Web Community — Posted: Dec. 5, 2007  ...   Last By: Nils @ 10 months ago

I am specifically looking for Apple Safari for for Windows 3.0.1 Beta. I know 3.0.4 is out, but it crashes on my windows xp machine everytime I load it, so one of the suggestions on a forum was to uninstall it, install 3.0.1, and then use Apple's Update Manager to fix it.

However, for the life of me I cannot find a download link for Apple Safari for for Windows 3.0.1 Beta

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Try ChaCha, just once

Web Community — Posted: Mar. 25, 2007  ...   Last By: Oli @ 1 year ago

Hi Everyone,

I encourage all of you to go Try ChaCha, a new search engine that not only provides the best results from all the major search engines, but gives you, the user, the ability to chat LIVE with a real person about your search query so they can help get you the results you are truly after.

The above link is my unique referral ID, but it simply takes you to the homepage so you can try ChaCha out.

Please, even if it is one time, try a regular search and if you don't get the results you want, try "Search with Guide" which is located at the top of your results page.

If you feel ChaCha is giving you relevant results that you want, then I encourage you going further by visiting Try ChaCha to consider downloading the ChaCha toolbar or even making ChaCha your homepage.

Thanks everyone,
Bryan

Figured I would quote a fellow 9rules blog,

ChaCha Gets $6M from Jeff Bezos, Others

It's pretty cool that our small little company in Indiana has garnered this attention and funding.

Having someone like Jeff Bezos among several other big names interested in our concept, even if it has bugs in it right now, is pretty cool.

Thanks Mashable!
