» 9rules Widgets Return  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Scrivs.

I like the top friends widget, because I'd like to be able to promote blogs that I like... But I don't really like that it links to their 9rules profile. I get that it's supposed to be promotion for 9rules... but still, if there's a link to the person, why not link it to the actual person, you know? You could have the "powered by" button link to MY 9rules profile, and the rest should be self-explanitory. I'd put something like that on my blog, for sure.

The stream thing, I dunno about. It's cool and all... but kind of nonsensical to someone who doesn't know (or care) what 9rules is. Also, what if I have a G-rated site, and some of the notes topics I respond to have R-rated titles? That's the kind of thing I would think about.

As for other widgets, I'd like to see a stream of my top 9's blog posts. I mean, this seems like the most obvious candidate, considering the whole point of the top 9, right? I'd basically like to pull my "9 from the top 9" feed and put that on my sidebar (formatted my way, of course).

First off... Holy crap... Skillet's still around?

I go to a certain unnamed it-bay orrent-tay site and search for my favorite bands, looking for entries that have "for fans of blah blah blah" in the title. My musical tastes are pretty varied, so this just gives me more of what I like.

Also, I try and find out what Zach Braff is listening to, and go listen to that.

@RightOn: Agreed, I'd do it myself, if I could cover my tracks well ;)

» It's just because I love you all so much  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by RightOn.

@RightOn: Think of it this way... if you're a web designer... are you going to do a site for someone that wants it to look like a piece of trash full of animated GIFs? It's a matter of portfolio... Their best advertisement is word-of-mouth, and they don't want to put out bad ads.

» It's just because I love you all so much  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by RightOn.

@carmodyarc: did your artist do that all with the 3-pin needle (liner)? I got a black tattoo on my leg and he didn't use the fill-needle... it hurt so freakin bad.

Really nice. You totally stole my idea though (the leaves, not the apple)

» Spinning 3D Logo?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by biagio.

Yeah it's definitely done with something like 3DSM, It looks exactly like a really badly rendered AVI file... bad scan lines and everything. Swift3D will produce much crisper graphics, though without the cool chrome effect. Actually, Swift might be able to do something like that... it's been some time since I used it.

Repeating Wallpaper Patterns

Design Community — Posted: May. 14, 2007  ...   Last By: joenewbreed @ 1 year ago

Where do you find cool wallpaper patterns? Is there a stock photo site that has a good selection? I'm referring, of course, to patterns similar to the one here on 9rules. floral, filigree, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

» Software to Compile iPod Library List?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by carmodyarc.

Hmmmm... I guess XML isn't what I was looking for...

What I'm trying to do is have a list of the artists from my iPod. If it were possible to create a .txt file of such a list, that would serve my purposes nicely.

Any ideas?

Oh, and thanks peroty and carmodyarc for the tip, I honestly didn't think to try iTunes

» help with my new site theme  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by nowickedwitch.

@jackosh: I like the simplicity, and the shift to the high contrast black-on-white. Much better.

Ok, my only suggestion is something spiffy to look at. Perhaps a nifty watermark in a fixed position in the bottom corner? Perhaps one that doesn't scroll?

That's my two cents.

Very nice theme.

Software to Compile iPod Library List?

Music Community — Posted: May. 11, 2007  ...   Last By: carmodyarc @ 1 year ago

Does anyone know of software that will provide a list (possibly in XML) of your iPod's contents?

Seems like it might be a relatively easy thing to do, but I'm not a software programmer.

What song do you wish you could play? (any instrument)

Music Community — Posted: May. 11, 2007  ...   Last By: littlerockjams @ 11 months ago

You know you've got one... One of those songs you get so into that you REALLY wish you knew how to play it. Whether it be a song with a killer drumbeat and you don't play drums, or perhaps the standard mindblowing guitar solo you wish you knew how to play.

So what's that song for you?

One of mine is the guitar track for "The Crowing" by Coheed & Cambria... It's not hard to find, so go look. The part that absolutely gets me is at about 2:50.

Also, and I know no one here listens to this band but me, but go check out the beginning to "Alaska" by Between the Buried and Me. It's really weird metal, but I think just about anyone can agree that the intro to that song is moving.

» Online Business Cards  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by joenewbreed.

@RightOn: So you're saying you don't think I can get away with making my own shitty-style business cards? :(

Ok, I dig the metal business card now that I think about it... I was originally thinking of something much thicker and nastier.

What someone needs to make is a business card with some kind of RFID technology that automatically transmits their information to any available device...

» Favorite Book of All Time?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by LorriM.

Oh, and definitely Ender's Game.

Also, for my two cents, I ONLY listen to books... I'm terrible at focusing on words on a page.

» Favorite Book of All Time?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by LorriM.

Fight Club, the original Dune Trilogy, The Chronicles of Narnia, Don Quixote

» Online Business Cards  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by joenewbreed.

@RightOn: I can understand wanting a plastic one, but a metal business card? Seems way too bulky and annoying for me. Although, I suppose if someone gave me a metal business card I'd be impressed.

So I have another question for you all. Which do you think makes more sense:

- Handing out a creative business card with all your information on it, or

- Handing out a business card with just a URL that has all your information, way more creativity, and a downloadable hCard so they don't have to fiddle with entering your information into their address software?

I guess the best option is to have both, but if you're trying to sell yourself as some kind of web-professional, doesn't it make sense to get them online as soon as possible rather than wowing them with a creative business card?

Also, do you think the creativity behind a business card might detract from the message your trying to get across (your name, and contact info)? Some of the cards on the link peroty posted are definitely creative and clever, but make reading and deciphering the info harder than it needs to be.

Any thoughts?

» Online Business Cards  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by joenewbreed.

@peroty: yep, already ma.gnolia'd that :)

» Online Business Cards  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by joenewbreed.

I've seen others, but I don't know where... Can't find the links!

It's actually quite brilliant... If you WANTED you could simply get white business cards with your web address printed on them.

Online Business Cards

Anyone know of any?

» What to charge for freelance design  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by joenewbreed.

Good point Karma. But again, my problem is trying to come up with a reasonable base amount. I don't have a portfolio, I don't know what other people are charging, so I can't be competitive or even comparable, you know? I mean, I love doing this stuff, so it's not hard for someone to get me to do their website for them. I want to get paid for it, of course, but don't know what to ask.

If I based it on what I need to survive, I would be overcharging someone, since I don't have a portfolio (aside from two personal sites). Any ideas?

@davidair: totally just ordered that book, thanks.

» What to charge for freelance design  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by joenewbreed.

@davidair: Thanks! very helpful
@peroty: Yeah, freelanceswitch is a good resource, but they base their advice on the assumption that freelance is your ONLY job, which is not the case for me. They suggest that you base your pay on what you need to survive, and I'm not looking to survive on freelance, just get some extra scratch :)

What to charge for freelance design

Design Community — Posted: May. 11, 2007  ...   Last By: joenewbreed @ 1 year ago

Ok, someone help me out here.

I'm trying to start a freelance business, and things are going Ok. However, the biggest problem I'm having is knowing what to charge. I have no real frame of reference.

Anyone have any pointers? What did you start out at? What is a reasonable hourly rate to calculate from?
