Hey Bob,

have you requested a GPU report from (mt) support yet? This could help you out.

Hello Again 9rules.

all you with GPU questions..please, contact support and have them generate a GPU report for you. This will show you what processes are creating how much load and give you an idea of why your GPUs are increasing or decreasing.

Cheers!

just started using AOL's xdrive..it's pretty decent for an online backup service

» Is something terribly wrong with (mt)?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by jmcvearrymt.

yah Carmodyarc..

getting dugg is what used to be what getting slashdotted was..which meant you went down due to load. One of the reasons we developed the Grid was handle massive massive load, and as we all know..it's had its problems. But it's also seen a SLEW of our clients through a front page digg experience without blinking.

the (dv) is a plan with dedicated resources..much like a dedicated box...that's when you need a quick connection to support to amp up your plan's resources (which is instant on a dv)) to survive a digg...having a very efficient site helps tremendously as well.

Jdandrea...i'm not sure what you mean:

"When the SmartPool system recognizes sudden spikes in database traffic, it allocates a single-tenant MySQL Container which allows the database to grow beyond its guaranteed resources. This unique feature helps customers survive temporary traffic bursts resulting from press releases, mass blog coverage, DIGG, etc."

and

"Rather than making everyone share and compete for resources on a single MySQL database, the SmartPool distributes users amongst a farm of MySQL Container Servers. Using virtualization technology, the SmartPool achieves a low user density per MySQL instance, which minimizes resource competition and improves overall system stability."

please clarify what you mean by availability

regarding 531..you see it on the front page of digg? I think that movie file had something to do with slowing down his dv..on the front page of digg (cough)

OK..enough is enough.

everyone read this page.
http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/gs/mysql-pool.htm
the container upgrades are for extremely high CPU usage.

the Smartpool more or less gives EVERYONE a free upgrade and allows you to burst, say if you get Dugg as well..if your MySQL usage stays at a constant high rate, you will need to upgrade.

9Rulers,

We are certainly not going down the tubes..We've definitely had our share of issues with the Grid, have developed some some fairly amazing technology to keep the Grid running at break-neck speed.

http://weblog.mediatemple.net/weblog/

That being said, with 55,000 domains on the Grid (and growing), we are constantly hiring, growing and making moves to smooth our operations.

Regarding Mosso, I can't speak for their service, but we're often compared to them..one thing to keep in mind is the Grid is $20/month while Mosso is $100/month; a vast difference.

MikeP, reviewing your email..Sorry i did not reply..did you need a reply? Seemed more like a note/suggestion, which was passed onto our product/bug managers.

Oli,

Regarding companies being involved in blog/online discussions, I think it's only fair to hear their side, whatever the situation may be. Often times, people request our presence in online discussion to clarify issues.

A far as our virtual pacakges, no, you can not install Win2k3 as the platform runs on linux. To host windows at (mt), you need to purchase a dedicated box.

And rich is right..for mt sales questions, it's prudent to contact them directly. I'm not a sales/product expert.

Hey Winnopeg,

Send me the domain you are referring to and I'll track the ticket and follow up to see why we couldn't solve your specific issue.

Oli,

We don't mind negative discourse. We've learned A LOT about our customers' needs via negative discourse. I think you'll find we don't try to scew the argument unfairly, we are simply looking for solutions.

Cheers,
Jason

Mike,

Please email me. I'd like to track your ticket and talk to our Support manager about this. Two days is not common and unacceptable. There's no better way to improve than to take these issues one by one and figure out how to solve the problem that created this delay

Thanks

ALOOHA 9rulers!

Our two core products are the (dv) Dedicated Virtual 3.0 and the Grid server. We have just launched the new (dv) server and are launching the Grid 1.2 in early march (read here: http://weblog.mediatemple.net/weblog/2007/02/20/grid-master-release-gmr-v12-upgrade-announcemet/

The short of it is: if you need the ability to handle heavy heavy load spikes, the Grid is a fantastic solution (there are also some awesome additional features other than the load handling capability) . Technically, it is still a shared environment, meaning there are core software upgrade limitations (although we do offer multi-version software bundles). The Grid technology was built on cluster technology to intelligently absorb load spikes, so this drastically limits the classic shared server "bad neighbor" issues and means you will not get shut down if you get dugg.

The (dv) allows you to control more intricate aspects of your server. You have root access and you actually have your own slice of the processor, so there is not the concern of "bad neighbor" policy and you have very granular control over your server.

Dhollister, I'm not sure how you are monitoring the dv/grid comparison. Site performance is usually determined more on how the site is built rather than the server..the dv and Grid should perform comparably (both very very quick also backed by tier 4 data center quickness ;-).

Also..always look at how many external services (stat counters, ad servers etc etc et..) the site is calling to. SOOOO many people use services that slow load times, it looks like the site's server is slow when in actuality, the server that hosts the outside service is slowing the load as the site calls to external servers (aunfortunate result of web 2.0) Then there's simply inefficient code that creates mega queries..always a bad thing.

Aloha 9Rulers.
I'll try to address some of the more general issues raised with (mt).

With the launch of the Grid, we have certainly experieinced more issues than EVER in our company's history. In an attempt to encourage transparency, be as responsove as possible and further keep our customers in the loop, we launched our blog (which details many of the issues and solutions we're implementing), have almost doubled our support and admin staff and offered a credit to those customers that were on the Grid and experienced downtime due to the general database/storage device issue, which has caused the bulk of load time issues

http://weblog.mediatemple.net/weblog/

regarding the more specific sales/support issues, please email me with details and i will further investigate these issues and address them accordingly.

Best regards,
