Mine would probably be this one:

I'm trying to get into concert photography and have just over 40 sets since starting in July. So when I stepped into the hall quick during a concert and got this shot of one of the drummers, I was pretty happy. Something about how it's so candid, but definitely captures the mood and his personality just strikes me.

While I think you're right about the reasoning behind the downfall of both companies, I'd like to offer a different angle as to the power of Arrington and Scoble.
p
I'm not sure if anyone will remember, but before in a discussion about ownce and its "success" I pointed out that I believed that the only reason it even caught on is that the name Kevin Rose was being thrown around. Now, Kevin probably made some decent coin from Digg and now Pownce, but do you think he really cares about the future of either once he's picked up and moved on to the next project?

Have a look at this:

I think the mention of hype is right on. These bloggers or tech people are moving in and using their influence for personal gain. Maybe it doesn't start out that way, but do you really think Scoble and Arrington will lose much from having either company fail? I don't, they'll pack up and move on to something else. They get free press out of the whole thing and we all know they're great at turning coverage into money.

It's scary really that such high dollar amounts are thrown around with such little regard and to people that don't have a product.

» What digital SLR camera to get?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by Sara.

As someone that went out and bought the Canon Rebel XT with a couple kit lenses back in the summer I strongly recommend against getting any sort of kit lens. It's tempting because it's packaged together and offers a decent focal range, but Joe's advice is right on and I wish I had done exactly what he is suggesting when I started.

Another thing I think you should consider is buying used. If you feel like you're likely to upgrade soon with the very tempting feature-packed 40d and incredible quality found in the new 5d around the corner it's probably not worth getting a new body, especially since the Rebel line is plastic.

You will get into a brand war everywhere DSLRs are discussed and so it really does come down to going to a local shop and trying some out. I think you'll be happy with any make and model, but some do offer advantages. From my experience and reading if you are looking to do low light (possibly concert) photography you'll probably want to go Canon because of better noise control whereas if you want a wider range of options available on the body you'll probably want to go Nikon. Still, trying to argue a brand is like trying to convince you to change your favourite colour. It's probably not going to happen.

» Does Patrick Norton irritate you?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by SonicGumbo.

I sometimes preferred him over Leo on TechTV back when it was around.

I try not to judge actors/celebs or anyone that gets large media attention and the way they appear or the things they say on camera though. My reasoning behind this is that the individual probably doesn't have control over their appearance or speech. Scripts are written and costumes or outfits (whatever you'd like to call them) are prepared to give a certain slant to things.

Looking at our personal lives, let's use facebook as an example for exposure. If you look at many people's profiles you find them stuffed full of photos of the individual drunk, doing embarrassing things and leaving awkward and regrettable messages to their friends that are often public. Crazy, isn't it? And we have control over that content; imagine what it would be like if you couldn't untag yourself, remove content or deny any of that information from becoming (semi) public.

I kind of strayed from the topic a bit here, but I think it's important to take a step back and consider that the whole podcast thing is probably just a job. Not everyone gets to do something they enjoy to make money.

I think Rich brought up a very important point; subjectivity. I'm just going to go ahead and leave you with a quote.

Nick Naylor: -OK, let's say that you're defending chocolate, and I'm defending vanilla. Now if I were to say to you: 'Vanilla is the best flavour ice-cream', you'd say:
Joey Naylor: No, chocolate is.
Nick Naylor: Exactly, but you can't win that argument... so, I'll ask you: so you think chocolate is the end all and the all of ice-cream, do you?
Joey Naylor: It's the best ice-cream, I wouldn't order any other.
Nick Naylor: -Oh! So it's all chocolate for you is it?
Joey Naylor: Yes, chocolate is all I need.
Nick Naylor: Well I need more than chocolate, and for that matter I need more than vanilla. I believe that we need freedom. And choice when it comes to our ice-cream, and that Joey Naylor, that is the defintion of liberty.
Joey Naylor: But that's not what we're talking about
Nick Naylor: -Ah! But that's what I'm talking about.
Joey Naylor: ...but you didn't prove that vanilla was the best...
Nick Naylor: I didn't have to. I proved that you're wrong, and if you're wrong I'm right.
Joey Naylor: But you still didn't convince me
Nick Naylor: It's that I'm not after you. I'm after them." ***Points into the crowd***

I recently got a Blackberry Pearl, but with no data plan. I work at a communications company so I got it for $100 sans contract (which is nice since I already have one). It's a great size, quality is excellent and it text messages a lot better than a T9 phone. So I'd recommend it if you can score a deal, but really it probably isn't worth the retail price.

» Acronym Misuse: CSS In Your HTML Doc  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Oli.

I think it's more that I just get frustrated when the term is constantly misused because it shows how people really don't know what it means or understand its application.

This whole argument is based on a bigger pet peeve, which is general misuse of acronyms. I'm not sure why it bugs me so much, but I guess it has something to do with people becoming comfortable with using them when they probably don't understand the concept.

A pretty good example would be when someone says "PIN number". Well, it's Personal Identification Number, so you're being kind of redundant there buddy.

Acronym Misuse: CSS In Your HTML Doc

Commentary Community — Posted: Aug. 17, 2007  ...   Last By: Oli @ 1 year ago

Alright, I guess this is probably just a pet peeve and I might even be wrong on the issue, but I'd like to get some second opinions on this. Correct me if I'm wrong anywhere in this note, please.

Now, style information has been a part of html for a long time. For all I know it's always been there. It would logically make sense that it has, I've just never tried to find out. I think everyone is clear on what style information is and what it does though.

Recently this information has been organized into external files, which we affectionately call a cascading style sheets, hence the acronym CSS. So a piece of me dies every time someone says they're putting some CSS in their HTML. You're putting style information into your HTML, you'd have a nice cascading style sheet or maybe several if you organized all this style information into external files. What gives?

I just wanted to clarify that I was using a single person as an example to help explain my point about one liners and the new TOS and not trying to point any fingers. After reading some responses it looks like that wasn't very clear. My bad.

» 9rules Terms of Service Update  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by Oli.

My take on this is that one liners aren't bad and can in fact be good conversation starters. The problem, and this is partially directed at Avuee, is that when you don't even answer your own question or give a little background information or insight to the topic at hand there aren't going to be many people that will feel inclined to jump into the discussion. They are simply not going to invest time and effort into a conversation that you, the topic starter, have not invested any in yourself.

Instead of starting a topic with every question that you have floating through your mind right now, stop, think for a little while and come up with a question that really means something to you. Something that has substance and takes some thought to answer. I think people are getting frustrated because all of these topics lack thought, effort and a time investment, which all equate to quality and many people would agree that quality is what this place is about.

» Special Education students: in or out of the class?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by deerwood.

To be fair it was close to 40, so I really meant high 30s. The tough part was that they put all of us in the same class, so we were an exclusive little group for all of elementary school with one teacher (changed every year with a few repeats). Talk about an adjustment come highschool. Half of our classes were still like this, with the same people though. So it was great when we all got to grade 12 and these "special" classes didn't exist and we were expected to integrate into a 1200 capacity school with 2000 students. Fun times indeed.

I'm still reeling trying to figure out if any of this actually helped me or seriously handicapped my academics because I have zero study skills or what would be considered good work habits. Frustration! Dismay! Oh, the horror! *sigh*

That graph is hilarious. Reminds me of the lecture a bio prof I had did on correlation versus causation. There was a similar graph that plotted number of people who eat ice cream and number of drownings, both versus time. Both increased in the summer months, which would seemingly suggest that by correlation eating ice cream increases the chance that you'll drown. I'm pretty confident that a little bit of reasoning will convince you otherwise.

» Special Education students: in or out of the class?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by deerwood.

I'm not ready to debate my stance on this issue just yet because I don't think the terms have been clearly defined. I think Oli really got what I was trying to point out. It was really a general question, but it would help if the original poster, kelsnotchels, answered too.

Just to give some background info, the reason I ask what everyone means by special education is that I was in the "gifted" program from elementary school on up through highschool and that was considered special education. We were separated from everyone else and it wasn't very well planned out because the class sizes got close to the 40's, ridiculous. I'm sure you can guess what kind of an effect that would have on the learning environment and why I'm a bit bitter about the whole thing.

What does special education mean to you? There are two ends of the spectrum here.

Again, slipping and hitting the ALT key is a very minor thing, that is easy to do and not notice. Slitting a throat, breaking a neck, suffocating a victim with a baggy -- all strike me as fairly deliberate acts where you are certain if you did them or not.

I see your point Oli, but I have to disagree and only about the part regarding certainty. Clearly killing someone is much different that hitting a button in many ways. However, to say that all people are certain they killed or committed another crime requiring a prison sentence is based around the assumption that these people are average and don't have some underlying mental condition and are not psychopaths. Do you really know how such a person thinks or what they remember?

I'd love to answer this question, but first I think there would need to be some clarification on what determines if a band is well known or not. The internet is kind of like word of mouth on steroids, so it's hard to figure out if you've actually just discovered something new or have really been under a rock and missed out on a big thing.

» Paper Personality?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by solepsis.

I think Nietzsche talks a lot about this whole issue of expression. He discusses how all languages are insufficient at accomplishing what their goal seems to be, the sharing of experiences.

Two people could be in the same place at the same time, but because of current and past emotions, conversations, memories and a slew of other things they won't share that experience save for the physical side of things. The same goes for your thoughts and ideas. The words and language of your writing or thoughts are nothing by themsevles. They require a history of emotion, personal experience and many other things to create a context.

Languages and that expressed through them can be interpretted in so many ways because we each bring our own personal context to the table, so to speak. We also have a context that changes over time and so reading the same words under a different state of mind with a changed perception would lead you along the same mental path.

That's how I see it at least. I think you're just frustrated with the inadequacy of language itself, or maybe that's just me.

» Buying a gift for your significant other  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by LorriM.

I must be some kind of crazy hopeless romantic. Even if I was tight for money I'd take the time to find a gift that I felt was personal. I mean, there are lots that are affordable too including homemade type stuff that shows you put the effort in. I just can't see myself talking about the monetary value of gifts. It really shouldn't matter, the price of something shouldn't determine it's personal value in my mind.

The whole concept of gifts is kind of strange. Sure, we all want fancy tangible things that can be hard for another peson to predict or know enough about to find, but shouldn't the enjoyment come out of sharing the experience of gifting and the intangible part of the whole exchange?

I guess to summarize I'm with Ryan on this one.

Doing something new and exciting and bringing freshness to a relationship is great. However, if you're feeling uncomfortable or there's some sort of uneasiness between you two it implies that there are some trust issues or maybe communication isn't as great as it seems.

To be fair though, you're being very vague and not really giving anyone enough detail to accurately comment on what you're going through.

I have no idea how much something like this would cost, but I can't see anyone buying one unless it's close to dirt cheap.
