Honestly, I'm just crazy about Adidas' "stripes" and their slogan "Impossible is Nothing" - very inspirational!.. I guess this is where the branding and logo took over rationality... What can I do?..

Besides, Adidas is very active at sponsoring events and athletes. So, no wonder people talk a lot about them...

What are the best days to publish posts?

Blogging Community — Posted: Feb. 1, 2008  ...   Last By: costanzo @ 7 months ago

I publish posts 3 times a week on my blog - Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. I used to post on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, but Friday seemed to bring not much traffic, notwithstanding the post... So I switched to Tuesday and Thursday, and I've noticed that most of my traffic comes on Thursdays.

What's your situation? I wonder whether it's common to everybody or it's just me...

Is it accurate to use the term "Web 3.0"?

Design Community — Posted: Jan. 25, 2008  ...   Last By: Johnny @ 6 months ago

One of the designers I've recently interviewed answered to my question on upcoming new technologies that personally he thinks that "Web 3.0 would be a revolution if is achieved an effective combination between the inclusion of semantic content in the Web pages and the use of artificial intelligence that takes advantage of it."

The term "Web 3.0", just as "Web 2.0", is meant to hypothesize about a future wave of Internet innovation. Yet, "Web 3.0" has been a rather controversial term itself, and many web designers/developers see little sense behind it.

So, I wounder if it is accurate to speak of another level of WWW evolution when the previous one has not really been agreed on and officially recognized?..

3 reasons you picked web design/development as your career

Design Community — Posted: Jan. 8, 2008  ...   Last By: alex-hardy @ 7 months ago

Whatever we do, there are always external and internal reasons for that. I wonder why you, guys, picked web design/development as your choice.

I personally got my degree in Mass Communications and Sociology. I worked as a newspaper journalist for two years after that. Having always been interested in cyberculture and its impact on society, I switched to online journalism and has joined Design Interviews blog a few months ago. My current responsibilities include interviewing web designers and administrating the blog.

To me, photography is the art of catching things beautifully and meaningfully on the picture. Photography is a medium that allows to deliver messages via pictures, so that they are as understandable as via words.

» Why are people so attracted to ugly?  ...  Last Reply: 5 months ago by mStudios.

In my interview with Keegan Jones I asked him almost the same question, and couldn't agree more with his response:

Me: Do you think design determines success? For instance, MySpace design is poor - yet the project itself is extremely successful.

Keegan: Design is important, but I don’t think it’s a means to an end. Ideas like MySpace are good enough to catch on, even with a crappy design.

» Why do so many web designers talk about web standards on their portfolio sites?  ...  Last Reply: 6 months ago by Stever.

Web Standards age began when Jeffrey Zeldman published his book "Designing with Web Standards", "the book that changed how websites are designed". So I suggest reading it in order to understand WHY web standards are so damn popular.

Who is your web design idol?

Whether designers, programmers or information architects, we all have people that influenced us and people we look up to because of their contribution to the industry we all involved in.

There are such Web wide known web design celebrities as Jeffrey Zeldman, Jeff Croft, Andy Clark, Mark Boulton, etc. They among others set the trends in web design industry - nobody would doubt that.

But there are many others who also contribute greatly. I don't know them all, but I'd like to. So, share your thoughts and names, please!

Do you think web standards are boring?

There is a rather passionate post on Jeff Croft's website about "making things that are compliant" and "making things that are cool". Jeff sums up with "compliance is fucking boring. Let’s try something crazy once in a while."

What do you think? Is compliance along with web standards really boring?

What is your favorite art-house film?

Howdy ya'll art-house film fans! Now that the Hollywood cheesy movies dominate the film industry it's hard to find good, deep films, as well as it's hard to keep a track of what's new and interesting on independent film market today.

So, let's share our preferences and likings in art-house genre, and have some "health food" for our brains!

What does "clean design" mean to you?

Design Community — Posted: Nov. 13, 2007  ...   Last By: aaronr79 @ 9 months ago

A lot of web designers/web design companies state on their websites that they specialize in creating "clean designs". Yet, their works differ one from another greatly in many aspects. So, it should be something beyond looks and feels... A couple of web designers I asked to define "clean design" said, "when there's a harmony"... Too general to me.

I don't have my own definition of "clean design" as well as I can't really distinguish "cleanly designed" website among other websites.

So, I was wondering what it means to you (if it does), and what stands behind the term "clean design."

Why is web design a male industry?!

Design Community — Posted: Jul. 23, 2007  ...   Last By: cooper @ 1 year ago

Computing and web design have been considered male fields by many. And this is not a stereotype. According to the National Science Foundation, the gap between the number of female and male recipients of Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Computer Science has grown immensely. Of course, there are many web designers who don’t have formal education in design, but still this is an evidence of a disproportion.

I've recently interviewed Amy Greiner and she said she didn't feel female web designers were a rarity, and there are many of them, too. But I do as I haven't heard much of women being featured in web design magazines, winning prizes for web design or lecturing at web design conferences. Aren't females ambitions and creative enough? Have you ever thought of this as an issue?

» What is the best way to meet new people  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by avuee.

I consider airports great places to meet new people. It's easy to start a conversation with just "So, going to NYC for Christmas... Have you ever been there before?" Or give a person your business card saying "Well, it was nice flying with you. Next time you're in Dallas, give me a call." And you can always ask a flight attendant for the contact info of a person you've met if didn't manage to ask personally. Anyways, there is some kind of chemistry on 2,000 feet from the ground :)

Truly speaking, it's just a matter of luck first and then persistence when you meet somebody. You never know where you'll meet your second half...

I was banned for self promotion. I referred to a web designer I interviewed and gave a link to the interview with him on my website. And the moderator said that "SitePoint prefers to have its members advertise in specified forums within its community."Self promotion can be, but it's not allowed to link to your own website and promote your services through a descriptive dialog.

Has anybody ever been in a situation like this? How do I get me account back?..

What do you think about crowdsourcing?

Technology Community — Posted: Jul. 17, 2007  ...   Last By: cechols @ 1 year ago

You've probably heard about "A Million Penguins" and "The Wicked Games" novels, which were so-called "crowdsourced" meaning that thousands of different people anonymously contributed to their story lines and actual texts.

Online publishers say this is a chance to restore good old folk culture. Moreover, as there are no rules and limitations in crowdsourcing, it gives an opportunity to use imagination to the fullest challenging tortured artists' minds.

But how valuable are such crowdsourced works? Folk culture usually refers to a certain nation, and here we've got a mixture of hundreds of cultures and traditions. I've read the first couple of paragraphs of "A Million Penguins" and it didn't make sense to me. Does it to you?

Web Design Tips in an Interview with Rob Weychert

Design Community — Posted: Jul. 17, 2007

Rob Weychert is an Art Director of the Philadelphia office of Happy Cog Studios. Having received a formal design education in print media, Rob has been successfully working on adapting traditions of print media to the web. "If you think of the two media as people, print is a wise old man who is set in his ways, whereas the web is still a child, unformed and full of potential. What I like most about web design is taking the lessons I’ve learned from that old man and teaching them to the child."

Hear Rob talking about the future of web design, what it takes for a project to be successful and why CSS is becoming so popular.
