IE7 issue: CSS horizontal menu

Design Community — Posted: Mar. 17, 2008  ...   Last By: guillaumeb @ 8 months ago

Hello, I corrected most of my error in the validator (there is only one left coming from a pluging but this one is not important at all)

My problem is that my horizontal CSS menu displays well in Firefox (Win or Mac) and safari but it is still vertical in IE7. basically the

  • elements are not inlined

    This is the code that I am using for the CSS is:

    #nav {margin-right:20px;margin-top:12px;width:1100px;}
    #nav ul {margin: 0;padding: 0;cursor: default;list-style-type: none;display:inline;}
    #nav li {display: table-cell;position: relative;padding: 2px 10px;font-family:Arial;font-size:11px;width:10px;}
    #nav a, a:visited {text-decoration:none; color:#666666;}
    #nav a:hover {background:#CC6644; padding-left:4px;padding-right:4px;padding-top:4px;padding-bottom:4px; color:#FFFFFF;-moz-border-radius:2px;-webkit-border-radius:2px}
    #navleft {float:left;width:420px;}
    #navright {float:left;width:350px;margin-top:-5px;}

    I tried changing display:inline; to display:block; but the problem persits

    Do you know where this might come from, I can't figure it out.

    Looks nice. A bit too traditional for my personal taste and probably more a theme to be used by webzines in my opinion.
    The page numbers at the bottom do not display well in Safari on my Mac, but they display correctly in Firefox.
    Keep up the good work

    Mat & Glossy screen affecting design rendering

    Design Community — Posted: Dec. 31, 2007  ...   Last By: Ozone42 @ 11 months ago

    As I am coding my website on a Macbook pro, I use a mat screen. Out of curiosity, I have checked out my site on my old laptop running Windows with IE7 and FF. It has a glossy screen.
    Now I have realized that the colors were actually way darker on the glossy screen and the text was barely readable... I would have thought it had produced the opposite.
    I hate the idea but I ended up writing a special IE CSS with brighter font colors because there are good chances that IE + glossy screen might actually be a recurrent combination for visitors coming to the site.
    Yet this leaves apart a good number of people using glossy screen + Firefox or another browser.

    I'm really intrigued to hear how the the democratization of glossy screen have affected your web design work
    In my case with that special CSS I made, there are barely no differences between

    font-color:#acb7bf; on safari/Firefox with a mat screen
    and
    font-color:#E5E5E5; on IE7 with glossy screen

    Check out my site from my profile if you want to judge by yourself.

    Now this is rather sad, and some might think this is just a detail but i'm pretty much tired to have to tweak things here and there in order to attmpt to get a unique design rendering.
    Yesterday it was a browser compatibility and today we're dealing with the nature of the screen...
    Am I alone in this situation?

    On another note, I wish you all a happy new year. I like it a lot over here and I have learned so much by reading the design notes. One of my resolution will probably be to promote the 9rules Network :)

    » Images rollover: B&W to colorized  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by guillaumeb.

    mmmm thanks for your reply. I've been looking around and this is way above my skills right now !!!
    I have simply resigned to pick the images by hand make two copies of them (b&w and color) with a simple js with onmouseover / onmouseout. works well in FF, safari and IE.

    This PHP thing seems neat though i'll have to think about it

    Images rollover: B&W to colorized

    Design Community — Posted: Dec. 30, 2007  ...   Last By: guillaumeb @ 11 months ago

    Hello everyone,

    I would like to add an effect to the pictures displayed on my weblog. You've probably seen black and white images that turned into full color once you mouse over the...well that's what I would like to do.

    Now I was wondering if there was done through CSS or through Javascript.
    I don't want to have to make the black and white pictures myself, I want a filter (or something like that) to be automatically applied upon he color picture (if this is how it works).
    This is gonna be applied for example to my Flickr stream.

    Anyone could tell me how this is done

    Thanks a lot

    » Do you think web standards are boring?  ...  Last Reply: 11 months ago by guillaumeb.

    As for me, I believe that one should make a difference according to the nature of the website.
    I mean I understand that a company website should be compliant to the standards and be 1)accessible by anyone on any device 2)developed according to the company owner criteria.

    But what's the point of a personal website if its author cant have "full" control over it.

    I would never blame someone to use Flash or even tables on his personal website.

    Since I'm no professional and mainly develop personal layout and design, I dont feel any pressure by those standards, i just like web design so i'm doing my best to come up with good web design and check my website in various browsers and whenever i got time and feel perfectionist, then I run the test and correct "so-called" mistakes.

    For example I dont really understand all this fuzz about the sIFR thing. If I want rich typo then I create an image with an alternative text. full stop. At least I know it's gonna work well in my iPhone - which does not support flash, nor load yet another JS. And anyone viewing a website on a text browser will get the alternative text and certainly does not expect anything fancy anyway.

    Well yeh that's what I thought thanks for your replies.
    Each time I'm like "ok this is not possible, it's all about CSS. But then I don't know why I keep noticing that everytimes.
    It may be because I accidently visit professional websites that are not hosted on Wordpress or because I'm having a hard time stepping back from my Wordpress designs (which I guess, appear dull to me throughout the time!)

    Anyway, thanks or confirming my delirium :)

    Publishing platforms & design rendering

    Design Community — Posted: Dec. 27, 2007  ...   Last By: guillaumeb @ 11 months ago

    Hi all,

    Each time I browse CSS galleries and web designers' weblogs, I get the feeling that the overall rendering of a website differs according to the publishing platform used. Is this normal?
    For instance I often get the feeling that weblog using Movable Type (or even Typepad) render color more vividly than Wordpress. I feel the same about Expression Engine.

    Apart from the coding part, are there any graphic rendering that one should be aware of?
    I can't really see why using Perl would have such an effect over using PHP but it has struck me several times.

    (I don't take drugs, I swear!!!)

    Hi all!

    Merry Christmas to you all! It's been a long time since I last posted over here.

    I'm redoing my weblog to something more minimalistic.
    The design itself is not really original but i'm pretty satisfied with the overall layout.
    Now since I know there are several professionals among you, I was wondering what you guys/girls would advise me to do now?

    I do realize that details make the difference to good webdesign but I may need an external point of view

    BTW, I still have not tested the W3C test but plan to do it at the end.

    This is what I am working on

    On text alignment

    Design Community — Posted: May. 1, 2007  ...   Last By: guillaumeb @ 1 year ago

    Hi all,

    By observing professional webdesigners, I have to say I have learned A LOT. Professionals usually pay attention to the very unique detail which will make the whole thing a lot better in the end.

    Now I have also observed that some of them do not use text-alignment. AFAIC, I thought this waspretty basic and I was thinking there might be a reason for that.

    Is there a particlar reason why you would not want to use text-align:justify; in your css?

    I decided to write about this because i stumbled on this amazingly well designed website which does not use the properties and I am wondering why

    » What platform is your blog based on?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by jackosh.

    @hthth:
    Well Wordpress certainly is good and flexible. Typepad Pro will give you the exact same features.
    I don't if it's me only though But I have the impression that Typepad designs just "look and feel" better.
    The inconvenience with Typepad is the upload of new files . Last time I checked I did not find how to FTP those files directly to Typepad, instead you have a traditional webbased uploader.

    Now the thing is, Typepad provides strong tools for blogging on the go and this was my main conerned actually. Like I aid I'm on Wordpress and do it via Flickr.

    Also I believe Wordpress provides many more extensions.

    Now both of theme provides a very deep customization tools.

    The important point however is that if you start with Wordpress without knowing a little bit of PHP and CSS it will probably take a year before you understand how to get a well designed place. At least this is what it took for me after playing around with various themes. Typepad may not be much easier when you go in deep customization mode but they have an efficient support team. I believe this would be the main reason why youd wanna choose Typepad Pro.

    » 43 Web Design Mistakes You Should Avoid  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by peroty.

    Well this is a very interesting list that I bookmarked on del.icio.us :p

    Just a thing:

    21. Use text navigation: text navigation is not only faster but it is also more reliable. Some users, for instance, browse the Internet with images turned off.

    Actually it's been commonly observed that text + icons are the best navigation layout. But yeh simple icons do not give us proper usability.

    Great work!

    Right now i'm doing the photos via Flickr and I use Kyte.TV widget to moblog my videos

    Oh BTW also I noticed that you could do better for the Go button of the search box. I'd replace it with an image

    » What do you think?  ...  Last Reply: 1 year ago by davekoen.

    Very nice! it's a very well done simplistic design
    Each time I see a pleasant work it makes me want to completely trash my own work lol

    Maybe I would put the banner a little more toward the top of the page
    Also I was thinking may be you could use a contrasting background (orange?) or a different green tone for the comment section just to spice it up a little
    Also I think it lacks an About page, I like to read about website's author, especially when I find their design very well done :)
    Finally it would be cool if you could manage to provide only the title of the article in the search results.

    Keep up the good work!

    Well in my previous thread I mentioned Veerle's blog because I was thinking about adding more colors in contrast to the background. I am currently trying to figure something out.

    My current test site (yeh I got many of them!) is located here. (have just been trying out stuff on the footer)

    I actually got the idea when doing a page for my girl friend

    Different color could maybe add a sort of "lounge" style which may stress the retro atmosphere I was looking for.. not sure

    This is the first someone tells me my site is cluttered with ads.
    i might get rid of the sidebar one though

    On design atmosphere

    Design Community — Posted: Apr. 27, 2007  ...   Last By: guillaumeb @ 1 year ago

    Hey!

    Alright so since I'm no professional designer, my main problem, I think is to create a particular atmosphere in a design work.

    I don't know whether it's because what I have in mind is not clear enough or because I suddenly think that this or this font would look better but create a contrast with the original idea... Though I am rather satisfied with the final result I'm just not sure that i managed to render the atmosphere.

    Could you take time to look at my website and let me know what were your first thoughts, your first impressions ? Is the whole thing homogeneous to you?

    To be more precise, I intended to create a rather retro atmosphere (use of the Gatsby font) with a touch or urban style ( B&W picture).
    Yeh I know this is rather vague isn't it?

    I'm just asking because I nearly killed my bro who just told me it looks like a Gothic website...!!!

    So I guess it's time to check up with knowledgeable people !

    Thanks a lot

    several times i stumbled on a very very well designed weblog.
    She's a professional designer I think.

    She's Belgian. On her site she uses high contrasts ( dark/black background). To contrast she uses vivid color. I think the top banner is cartoonish and we can see her red hair or something. In fact on the banner she's listening to music and we can see a headset.

    Does that speak to anyone ? here i'm trying to find the url. I actually liked it very much and that'd be a very good influence for my redesign

    Thank you

    Hi guys!

    I am experiencing a design bug. My site does not display properly in Internet Explorer 6. It works fine in other browsers from different OS though.

    The W3C Validation test has found 5 errors but then concern the presence of CSS elements inside the body of the page I tried moving those css properties to the head but since they are tied to the moblogging feature of Flickr it screw up the display... not sure why..

    Anyway I tried completely removing those elements but i'm still experiencing problems with IE6.

    Here is a screenshot from browsershots (though i use FF,I upgraded to IE7 so this screenhsot is my only reference...)
