I usually go to the Web Hosting Talk forums whenever I have a hosting question or want to get an opinion on a host. I don't have any experience with Network Redux (sorry), but I know that Steadfast and MediaLayer are shared hosts with great reputations on WHT.
I think is depends on what you mean by "connect with each other and share their experiences." ExpressionEngine is highly customizable and a non-profit license is only $100, so you could look into that. Maybe run your requirements by their pre-sales dept.
Thanks for taking a look Seopher. The drop cap is working in both cases, but I'm seeing different margins/spacing in the two versions in Firefox2 - they are identical for you?

It's totally bizarre, but it's definitely tied to the escaped character. I even tried changing the charset, and it didn't matter. I'm stumped.
I'm having a weird drop cap issue in Firefox. These two pages are nearly identical - the only difference is that test1 has an escaped character in the text (amp#8217; to be exact):
Does anyone know why that would cause the difference in margin/placement on the dropcap? And if there's any way around it?
This is the CSS I'm using to create the drop cap:

Thanks, Oli. That makes sense. I tried this Web Page Analyzer and got the same results as Pingdom's, so I shot them an email to see if I could confirm what's going on. I'll report back when I hear.
I was working on a site a few months ago. The design called for each section to have a different color scheme, and therefore a different masthead background image. I was using the Full Page Test on Pingdom.com to see how my load times were looking, and I noticed that all 9 masthead background images were loading, even though only one was being called by the HTML - every background image in the CSS was being downloaded, regardless of whether the HTML called for it or not. I double checked by testing 9rules.com in FPT, and it was the same result - all the background images loaded for every page.
Does anyone know if this a quirk of the FPT on Pingdom, or if this is what actually happens? What I ended up doing was stripping out the section specific background image styles and linking them in separate CSS files for each section to save the unnecessary ~250KB per page load. I'm wondering now if I did this just to make FPT happy, or if it actually affects my site in the real world.

Are you looking for actual patterns that you can use, or examples of sites that use patterned backgrounds? If it's the former, Squidfingers has a bunch you can use for free. If it's the latter, Design Meltdown has a section for ornate background sites.
adding padding to the li or the a will break on font-size change, too, since the padding is calculated around the text, and the height of the text is determined by the font-size. your best bet is probably to block your a's and set their height, like Oli said. the text is small enough in that area that users will be able to bump the size up at least a couple notches before it breaks, though you do already run out of space horizontally on one bump.
not a problem. i just had to figure out what that font was from an existing logo, too, so i had eurostile on the brain. luckily i only had to deal with the un-skewed version.
Maybe Eurostile Extended Bold skewed? Would make sense, since there is no natural italic of that typeface.

I'm not sure what the other guy is trying to accomplish, since he even left your copyright info on it. Maybe just keep your eye on it, and if he starts adjusting it for his own use, then take action. He might just be using it to learn how you built your site.
Bulletproof Web Design is a fantastic book, but it's not really a CSS book, per se. It's more for people who have an understanding of HTML/CSS and want to do things the right way.
I'm a big fan of Designing Without Tables from Sitepoint as a beginning CSS book. Getting this with Bulletproof Web Design would give you a great foundation.
If we're talking print, I'll go through Scala, Avenir, Trade Gothic, DIN, Bauer Bodoni, Mrs. Eaves, Univers and Rotis first, depending on the feel of the piece. If none of them do the trick, Franklin Gothic or Baskerville (depending on if I need a sans or serif) will usually work.
If it's Web, does it really matter? Though I have had fun starting to specify the new Windows web fonts for 20% of the viewers.
At the risk of driving this into the ground, how can they lead with this in the right column: "Simple! Even your mom will love it." The whole thing just feels like a really bad translation.
A logo that could benefit from some more space between the letters. The hand is a little creepy, too. Overall a good lesson to think about your design work in the bigger picture before going forward.

i've got about 2,200, but i'm sure i could cull that down to 500 if i took a couple hours to sort through them. i'm a bit of a pack rat, though, so that'll probably never happen.
@JulianBH: get a font manager (i use linotype's fontexplorer - it's free and it's great) so that photoshop and any other programs you're using will only have to load the fonts you have active. having a ton of fonts active can lead to sluggish performance overall and can cause crashes.
It now looks an awful lot like Subtraction.

Not sure about the anti-aliasing issue, but Franklin Gothic and Univers have a similar feel to Helvetica. The capital Rs of both are very distinct from Helvetica, though. Arial is the closest you're gonna find, since it was basically designed by Microsoft so they wouldn't have to license Helvetica.
