Depends on a lot.

  • What language are you coding in (PHP / ASP.net /etc)?
  • How are you looking to manage the store and what controls are you looking for?
  • How many products are you adding and what attributes?
  • Is the client going to be maintaining this / are you / or will there be no need for maintenance?
  • Are you technically savvy or just looking for the easiest to implement?
  • Is the whole site being built around the store / or is the store being built around the site?

Hi Diego,

I got mine in Office Max (no clue if there is one in London). It was from Avery - Easy peel while mailing labels. I can add my own custom design on their and it was all I needed.

You can check out their website to try and track some down: Avery.com

Hi Mark,

Interesting concept, however I don't find much use for the tilting of the images. It would be 1 thing if you could tilt and see approximately how many pages there were or the binding of the actual book for some depth perception, but b/c they're all flat images it doesn't seem to have much purpose.

This navigation was actually covered in smashing magazine's notes n creating a successful online portfolio - Pitfall #4: Uncommon Navigation. It makes sense to stand out and be unique but you lose some usability and familiarity with your users.

Also, i'm not a huge fan of the back of all the books in plain black. Just needs a little more life perhaps. Anyway, thought I would give my 2 cents. Good luck!

I'm sure you've already seen this - but for those who haven't.

Creating a successful Online Portfolio is an excellent article that covers certain pitfalls and principles needed to create a well-rounded portfolio.

On another note - you can always go on craigslist and post an add in the computer services section and cut your rates to get more attention. This is a great way for getting some real world experience in balancing your project's pipelines, design capabilities, standards, building your folio, and of course dealing with people who want everything under the sun for $199.

Hi Mike,

Coolio - lookin good ;)

1 Suggestion: Make the screen-shots BIGGER on the lightbox. Show off the detail of your work.. over-all good job though, glad it all came together.

Basecamp <3

» Todo lists  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by aadil.

Hi amine,

Alright so i just signed up and love it! Very clean and effective, my favorite view is the dashboard with seeing all of my tasks aligned in front of me. I like having my tasks organized in a simple view like this vs having it on my ical or basecamp which is full of some many other components

Suggestions:

1. I would like to be able to sort my task lists using Ajax DHTML to drag and drop in specific orders. So that I can focus on the higher priority lists
(let me know if you need some help finding tips on adding this)

2. I am half-and-half on how I like the completed tasks look. I do like on the list view how it adds it to the bottom to show it's completed, but when I view in the dashboard mode sometimes it helps to see the completed tasks as well.
- My team functions on Basecamp so we're used to seeing the line-through on completed tasks, maybe we're just partial to that. Or maybe you could just have it grayed out on the dashboard view, idk. Just a thought

Anyway, best of luck with your app. You have our team's support, thanks and let us know how it goes!

As a senior project manager for our design team I have looked at many online portfolios during our hiring process.

We were never primarily concerned about the look of the applicant's portfolio but the quality of work that was produced for the client. Perhaps your work was not adequate enough for the company you were applying for - or they were looking for something specific in particular.

Checkout smashing magazine's list of fresh and clean designs for inspiration for your portfolio.

Clean and clear is key. Checkout the dynamicdrive's list of Gallery ideas.

Best of luck!

Apple Mouse ball... ;(

Apple Community — Posted: Feb. 22, 2008  ...   Last By: atom @ 5 months ago

Alright.. so i own the wireless mighty mouse AND the wired one that came with my imac.

BOTH i have managed to kill the scrolling ball (only downward) so that it doesn't respond when i scroll down using the ball.

I've tried using a dry cloth and clean it by rolling it around - and have even used a verrry slightly damp cloth and done the same. No Dice.

Does anyone have any tips on how to save the every-so-important scrolling ball? Or am i just a grease monkey who should never deserve to use one?

OK... well it's been modified slightly with some bigger images and the same border type that you had used in your sample. Still not dynamic - but i'll keep playing with it.

I do have 1 last question:
If you view these flash header section of the portfolio. Is there anyway to play the .swf using lightbox that anyone might know about? I know there are solutions within flash to decrease the brightness of the stage but I'd really like to use the current .swf and have it play in the lightbox.

Any ideas? <3

Tahoma, Trebuchet MS, Helvetica, Verdana, and Arial are mah babbbbies ;)

but again, it all depends on the project.

Nice.. i do like the idea of showing off the real size header vs just a thumbnail of the site.

I might actually end up using this format with a little modification (i'll give u props in the source). Thanks again Oli for taking the time to work on that - much appreciated.

i do like the idea about the thumbnails / full images in the same directory.

However, by parsing out the title in a span all in the image name kinda defeats the point you made on your original post:

I don't know what the sites are about, how you worked with the people, what the timeframe was, etc. God is in the detail.

I might end up using a dynamic drive script - for a php album. Then it would be a matter of working out how to format the page to show the big image and descriptions. I do like the lightbox viewer and I currently have some brief details below the large image - but it just doesn't effectively get the details across like i'd want.

Looking for a unique way of displaying my Portfolio

Design Community — Posted: Feb. 18, 2008  ...   Last By: designzillas @ 9 months ago

I'm looking to rebuild my design portfolio. I'm currently listing 6 thumbnails per page and using Lightbox for larger view. While this is a nice solution, i'm looking for something a little more organized / and cooler.

Current Portfolio - if you have any suggestions on how to enhance the look of this or have some examples that might give some good inspiration, let me know!

p.s. I would prefer some dynamic use of PHP that will automatically list the latest designs first. Right now I manually list 6 per page - and I have to wait until I have another 6 to add additional pages. thanks!

» Anyone know of any good Cross-Browser viewers?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by Ozone42.

Thanks so much MrSanders! Luckily i do have an intel based imac <3

I just caught one of those stupid .png transparent ie6 issues so i'm glad i did get it up and running ;)

much appreciated..

» Do you use Craigslist?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by designzillas.

I own and operate my Orlando web design company: designzillas, and owe a lot of my leads to craigslist. I generally get 1-5 requests a week from craigslist alone - just by posting in my area. You don't need to over-post or even post in alternate locations - just a good title, and a solid graphic that represents your services: example of mine. I've actually had some calls from people in Tampa (which is where I am actually from) so I would recommend posting your services on there, plus it's free ;)

Anyone know of any good Cross-Browser viewers?

Design Community — Posted: Feb. 12, 2008  ...   Last By: Ozone42 @ 9 months ago

There's nothing like viewing a wonderful design layout perfectly styled in firefox / safari but falling victim to the horrors of ie.

Working off my 24" iMac - I really dislike the fact of having to boot up my pc box just to run some cross-browser references (ie6 - ie7) from the websites being designed.

Does anyone know of any good free "Viewers" that will let me see the designs in the eyes of all browsers? I'd greatly appreciate it, thanks <3
