Definitely a tough question, and one I've thought about before. What did I do before I became an interactive designer? I was a Wendy's restaurant manager. Not that I'd EVER... EEVAARRRR.... consider going back to that by my decision, if I had to... well, gotta support the family you know. lol

Other things I would consider is something in art, whether it be painting, portraiture, whatever. Something along those lines. Guaranteed not to pay well, but you never know! lol Or start writing a novel or something, I don't know.

I don't really have too many viable options hahaha Hopefully everything will stay ok. o.0

» Does your blog make money?  ...  Last Reply: 3 months ago by katelynjane.

Between Adsense, Kontera, and Text Link Ads, we're averaging about $150 every 2-3 months on Volksbloggin. That's not too bad at all compared to the effort Mrad and I put into it. We wish we had more time, but that's more than enough reward so far. Adsense is the biggest contributer to it, with TLA being a very close second.

I think the Pats are gonna go all the way, but the Giants aren't gonna take it lying down. Believe me, I'll be rooting for the Giants. But on the other hand I'd love to see the Pats go undefeated too. :P

True that guys. I saw that container stuff just a while back, and it does seem shady. I have not been happy with all the problems MT has had with this new Grid server stuff, but I'm sticking with them. They're too high a quality host to leave for someone else. :] They'll iron out all the details.

» Mint vs. Analytics  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by CK.

I've been running Mint on Volksbloggin since its inception, and have wondered why site access seems to be slower than it should. So Mint could be the culprit eh? I host on MT as well.

Thanks Armen. Yeah, can't stand those buggers down there with IE6. I've just been too lazy to fix it. lol We'll get around to it hopefully.

Hahaha nice job wrttnwrd!

» What are some web++ design trends you are starting to get annoyed by?  ...  Last Reply: 7 months ago by realepicurean.

Ehhh I don't know Armen. I do fully understand your point though. I could come across that way. I apologize. What I'm trying to say is that I feel we're beginning to see just too much of the same thing. Maybe it's only me who is seeing this trend? I definitely have to battle myself everyday to grow beyond these typical design elements. Push the envelope.

There isn't anything inherently wrong with any of the things that all of us have listed here. It's just when you start seeing the same thing over and over and over and over again across just about every site you come across, it begins to get a bit jaded. Just hit up any of the popular css galleries and most of the designs are very similar, with a few that stand out as going above and beyond.

Where is the innovation? Where are the new ideas? Maybe it's only me that feels I have become complacent? I look at my own work and I see the same trends that I see most others doing.

Yes, we need to embrace the medium we work in. There will always be standard conventions and elements that we need to work in/around. But how do we innovate upon those same old conventions?

Yeah, my coworker has multiple crashes everyday while using it on the Mac. FF on PC running in Parallels seems to be fine. He finds that it crashes most when working in Gmail. I only use it for testing typically, so I don't have a lot of opportunity for it to crash.

» Some affirmation please  ...  Last Reply: 8 months ago by daxgti.

Oh man, you're cracking open Pandora's Box with this one. lol Just kidding. My recommendation would be to backup your system, then do the Archive and Install option. My coworker and I updated as soon as it came out and we each had our share of problems, unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE leopard. :] My machine is a Core Duo Macbook Pro while his is a Core 2 Duo.

After backing up my system (Thank goodness I did!) I tried a direct upgrade. The process failed saying that it was unable to do the upgrade. I can't recall the error now but I found a few people with the same problem on the Apple Forums. I think it had something to do with the partitions, being that I have Bootcamp installed.

No matter what I tried, I couldn't get it to work. Also, it corrupted something in the failed upgrade process so I ended up having to do a complete wipe and fresh install. It's golden now with only minor nuisances having cropped up here and there. The 10.5.1 update seemed to remedy a lot of those.

My coworker did a direct update and everything seemed to go ok, but he ended up having a lot of crazy bugs like molasses-slow wireless access to networked drives, his disk and other items not showing on the desktop, finder problems and other things. He finally gave up, backed up his system and did an archive and install. Everything looks to be running well for him now.

I'm not saying these are typical results by any means. Just be sure to do your due diligence in backups and other preparation and you should be ok.

I think with css gaining support and designers' increasing knowledge of its use has caused us to fall into the trap of making most sites look the "same but different". Yes, css has made our lives incredibly easier than the table days, but at the same time we seem to be churning out the same design with a different style. Maybe it's a lazy factor? Since we can do things so much easier, we don't make the extra effort to do something really special.

I feel as a whole we're not thinking much outside of the box. *BUZZWORD!* I remember the good ol' days where you'd come across unbelievably interesting and groundbreaking projects just about everyday while surfing places such as K10K, surfstation, and the like.

Some examples:
1. Same old centered fixed width
2. Same old trends i.e. pattern textures, gradients, rounded corners etc.
3. Chunky boxes, grungy frames, etc.
3. Trying to think of other examples but it's too early in the morning :P

Anywho, I'm in this quagmire myself, and am currently trying to break free of it. Fight complacency!! haha

» Gamespot reviewer fired: game review payola?  ...  Last Reply: 9 months ago by daviddemchuk.

It's tough to make a complete decision about this case for me as well, but I think if it's the guy's job to write reviews, then they need to be honest reviews. if it turns out to be a negative one (and as long as he's professional about it), then so be it. If the game sucks, the game sucks, and it shouldn't matter if the company who created it is a current advertiser etc. etc.

The way Gamespot is handling this screams to me that I can't trust their reviews. If a guy gets canned for being honest, then how could you trust them?

They do say "Any publicity is good publicity." At least, I think that's how it goes. :P I agree with you that Apple users are prolly more vocal than the average computer user. I also think it has to do with everyone expecting Apple to fully live up to its own hype about how solid their machines are, how usable they are, so on and so on. As dango mentioned, there's no one else to point the finger at.

I couldn't comment on what would be reasonable traffic for a site 3-6 months old because so many variables could affect that, such as subject matter, niche penetration, authority, and other quaint buzzwords like that. ;)

I would suggest you try to focus on writing quality content on a regular or semi-regular basis. How often you do is totally up to you, but it's important to try to stick to that schedule once your visitors become used to seeing it. Once a day... once a week, multiple per day... once a month?

If you're hot and heavy for the first few months and then you drop off, it will definitely turn off your readers as they'll think you've lost interest and/or new ideas.

As far as traffic goes, content still is, and always will be, king. Write good content and traffic will increase.

At Volksbloggin, Matt and I try to have at least one Featured article per week, one or more Industry News per day (those are typically links out so they're easy to keep up with), and one general article every one to few days or so. This keeps the content train rolling, and keeps us providing relatively focused, quality stuffs to our visitors. (they might disagree, I don't know) lol

We're averaging 8,000 to 10,000 unique visits a month after being live for about 1 1/2 years now, with most of it being search engine traffic. Our highly focused content attributes to that. We'll be focusing more on social-type traffic after an upcoming redesign to keep the growth moving!

I hope that provides a little insight!

Jensized is right. Two-way street, share and share alike. You guys need to talk to each other openly about what's going on.

Instead of you doing your thing and expecting her to be satisfied, and her possibly doing the same to you, each of you should be looking for how they can help the other meet that person's needs. You'll meet in the middle. Selflessness instead of selfishness.

You are two people trying to be one. There's bound to be friction. Selflessness tends to be the lubricant between the two. :)

Hahah thanks for the help Ollie. :D I did try removing the spaces as well and no donuts. When I first got my account setup, it was working just fine, so maybe Flickr changed something, or streams got crossed somewhere and cats and dogs started living together? I don't know.
